Butsusama, Sugiurasama" ("God, Buddah, Mr. Sugiura"). Tadashi Sugiura
brought the Tokyo Giants into the All Time League in style. After
getting into immediate trouble in the first inning when Pete Rose
singled sharply to right field, and Johnny Evers followed with a
double down into that same corner, Sugiura settled down and retired the
next ten batters in a row. He seemed to tire in the eighth inning,
allowing two men on base again for the first time since the first
inning.
In the top of the ninth, with two outs and Katsuya Nomura on first
base, Yoshio Yoshido pinch-hit for Sugiura and walked. Yutaka Fukumoto,
the superlative leadoff man then lifted a single to left-center that
dropped in front of Hack Wilson, and Nomura scored the go-ahead run.
Yutaka Enatsu came in and made that run stand up, gaining his first
Save of the season -- and giving the Tokyo ballclub a win in their
first game in the league. The Giants banged out 8 hits and garnered 5
free passes, but left 9 men stranded against Carl Mays, who went the
distance for the Pilots.

Revenge
The
second game of the opening series with the Pilots went more like the
Seattle faithful expected. Forkballer Shigeru Sugishita got roughed up
a bit, allowing 5 walks and 4 runs in 8 innings, but he finished what
he started -- as did Seattle's Dizzy Dean. This time even a home
run by Kaoru Betto could not turn the tide for the boys from across the Pacific. The Pilots scored 3 in the
second inning on 2 walks, 2 singles, a balk and a stolen base. Though
they got another run in the 4th on a single, stolen base (Templeton's
second of the game), error and double-play, they didn't need more than
their first three.
Dizzy Dean allowed 9 hits and a walk, but again the Giants left too
many men on base (7 this time) and could not score when given the
opportunity. Tokyo's offense is not catching on all cylinders, and may
need a tuneup fast before things get out of hand. This league is a
tough one, and the Giants can't walk through the season leaving men
stranded on the bases all the time. It is time to remind them of the fundamentals of moving the runner along.
It should be noted that there was some commotion around the ballpark
during both games, and although it was difficult to determine, it
seemed there were rumours of American gamblers and theYakuza shooting
it out in a local sports bar. Something about an injury to Jiro Noguchi
-- who for some strange reason did not pitch the second game as he was
scheduled.
