Pittsburgh (ATL) The weather was a
little better today for Game Two, the grass was still wet from
intermittant showers, but the temp was noticably higher. This portended
well for Pirate starter Randy Johnson; as the season warmed up, so had
he. He finished by winning 9 of his last 10 decisions, good enough to
come in 2nd in the victory parade among the league's hurlers. His
opponent Kazuhisa Inao came in a little less heralded, with but
three ATL victories notched in his glove through 18 starts and 3 relief
appearanes. But if you thought this wold be an easy "W" and an
insurmountable 2-0 lead for the
hometown nine, think again.

Again,
the Jays break through in the first, although it could have been worse.
Derek Jeter started the game off by coaxing a walk out if the big
lefty. Joe Kelley, so maligned during a disappointing rookie season for
the Jays, followed with a three bagger down the right field line. The
Big Unit regained his composure from there, however and set aside Vlad
Guerrero, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa - not a slouch among them - to
end the threat. Things moved along peacefully until the bottom of the
second, when it seemed that Gabby Hartnett had struck a decisive blow
for the Buccos. Batting Champ Jesse Burkett started the party off with
an opposite field two bagger and pesky Billy Francis worked a 5 pitch
walk from Inao, bring the stocky receiver to the plate. Hartnett worked
Inao to a full count, then launched a long homerun down the left field
line to clear the bags and at the same time give the Bucs a big 3-1
lead. Inao then put aside the rest of the Pirate lineup easily enough,
but it seemed the damage had been done.
It was the fifth inning that was Johnson's undoing, and really, it was
his defense that let him, and the team (and by extension, the city)
down. With one out and the score 3-2, Vlad was given a free pass, and
then promptly allowed to proceed to second when the aforementioned
Hartnett allowed a Johnson delivery to get by him. Normally reliable
John Henry Lloyd then booted a routine chopper to short, and the speedy
Guerrero came all the way home on it to tie the game, while the batter,
Sosa, proceeded all the way to second as Lloyd chased the hot potato
down. Homerun Baker, a lefty no less, then added to the Unit's misery
by booming a two bagger into right, scoring Sosa and giving the Jays a
lead. After Edgardo Alfonzo walked, Johnson recovered to whiff Hank
Gowdy and seemingly get out of trouble, as Inao was up next. But the
Japanese import crossed up that theory up by finding a hole between
Lloyd and Francis, bringing home another run. 5-3, Jays.
The final was 7-4, and the Bucs did threaten in the ninth,
bringing the tying run to the plate with two down, but Henry Kimbro,
the Buc's dangerous leadoff batter, stranded them with a fly to the
vast expanse that is center field at Forbes Field.
So the series moves to Canada tied 1-1, which can only be seen as a
victory for the Jays. They had come back from the precipice, and now
had captured the home field advantage.

Game 3
Toronto (ATL) The city was abuzz, playoff baseball was here, in the
Great White North!
The East Division Champion Pirates were in town to take on the hometown
favorites, those Toronto Blue Jays. Larry Jansen (12-9, 3.61), so
clutch during the season, was to take on Ed Walsh (13-6, .3.32), proud
owner of the first and only perfect game in the ATL's short history. It
promised to be a good old fashioned pitcher's duel. It didn't work out
that way.

Right
from the start, the Pittsburgh lumber company had their bats working.
Kimbro singled. Lloyd tripled. 1-0, Pittsburgh. Hornsby grounded out to
Jeter, but the speedster Kimbro scampered home. 2-0, Pittsburgh. Jansen
wriggled out of further trouble, but the tone was set. In the bottom of
the second Oh went deep again for the Jays - the Bucs had no answer for
the Japanese slugger - making it a 1 run game. But that didn't last.
With one away in the third, Rajah Hornsby went shopping at the left center gap and came away with a nice shiny two bagger. But
The Big Cat,
John Mize, saw Raj's double and raised him two. Homerun - 4-1 Bucs. Big
Ed Delahanty, seemingly finding his groove now that the playoffs have
started, laced a single to right. Then
The Crab,
Jess Burkett, an excellent hitter but not exactly known for his power
(10 HRs during the season - repectable, but not overly impressive),
found the right field bleachers making it 6-1 Bucs. It was no longer a
one run game. But these Jays don't give up, that's for sure.
Heading into the sixth, Walsh was cruising. His was the first good
pitching performance from a starter on either team - so far. That was
about to change. Isao Harimoto pinch hit for Gowdy and worked out a
base on balls after being down 0-2. An out later,
Nails,
AKA Lenny Dystrka (again!) grounded a double over the third base bag.
Jeter followed with a run scoring grounder. Then, on an 0-1 count,
Larry Walker went yard, the crowd went ballistic, and we had a ball
game again. 6-4, Bucs. When Oh tripled Eddie Walsh's fine effort had
turned sour, although the Bucs still held a tenuous lead. Johnny
Franco, the gritty New York kid, came in to pitch to
Homerun Baker. He did his job, squelching the rally right there when Baker flew out harmlessly to Kimbro.
You know, nothing comes easy. Having clawed their way back into the
game, the Jays were dealt back to back blows in the 7th and 8th frames.
Hard throwing lefty Curt Simmons came in and was rudely greeted by the
Bucs. In the seventh Mize tripled home Lloyd, who had singled, and
Delahanty knocked in
Big Jawn
with a base knock. An inning later Pop Lloyd was again in the middle of
things, legging out an infield hit that scored pinch hitter Judy
Johnson. 9-4, Bucs. But ... nothing comes easy.
Rapid Robert Feller was the odd man out of the Buc rotation, even
though he won 15 games. But you could say he's a good sort to have in
your pen for the playoffs. But you might also say the Jays were not
overly impressed. In the 8th, after two quick outs Larry Walker coaxed
a base on balls out of Feller's sometimes wild right arm. Oh did the
same. Uh-oh. McGwire pinch hit for Baker, and the righty on righty move
paid off, as the
Bash Brother
bashed a two bagger down the left field line, scoring Walker. Joe
Kelley continued his fine post season hitting by booming a triple over
Kimbro's head in center, scoring everybody. 9-7, Bucs. Feller recovered
to get Frank White on a grounder, but we had a game ... again.
In the bottom of the ninth Troy Percival was called upon to do his
magic. During the season he was untouchable. Really untouchable. 70
innings, 28 hits. That works out to a .123 batting average against.
That's
umm, pretty good. Righties hit a "
robust"
.071 against him. Untouchable. But he'd been touched up quite a bit
already by these Jays once, and that surely weighed on his mind. If he
blew this save, well, lets say momentum just might be on the Jays'
side. And they did attack Percival pretty good, but Vlad Guerrero
grounded into a pretty 3-6-3 DP after Bob Boone had led off with a
single. that really put the pressure on. But the Jays weren't done yet.
Not when there's still a single out left in the game. Dystrka walked.
Concepcion lined a double to right, but Delahanty carries a powerful
arm out there and there was no reason to take chances here. Not with
Larry Walker coming to bat. But Percival bore down, and Walker flew out
on a 2-2 fastball to end the game.
Bucs win, 9-7 to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Nothing comes easy.
Tomorrow it will be ex-Jay David Cone (7-5, 3.00) vs. Mike Moore (7-6,
3.71). Would this be the Jays' last hurrah, or will they take it to the
full five? Stay tuned ..

Game 4
Toronto (AP) The Jays came into this game facing elimination. On the
hill for the opposition was David Cone, a tough competitor and owner of
a wicked fastball with serious late movement, So things could have been
better right from jump street. But when Jesse "The Crab" Burkett boomed
a base loaded double into the right center gap in the first inning,
giving the Bucs a 3-0 lead ... well, things looked downright awful.
Except there's no "give" in these guys. So nobody in either dugout was
surprised when in the bottom of the frame the Jays loaded the sacks
full for Joe Kelley, AKA "the resurgent one." And on one in
either dugout was surprised when he cleared those same bags with a very
loud triple to tie the game. This was gonna be one of those games.
After the first both Cone and Mike Moore, the Jays starter, settled
down. But in the fourth, the Pirates dynamic duo - Henry Kimbro and Pop
Lloyd did it again. Kimbro, having reached base on a fielder's choice,
scored (which is what he seems to do best) on a Lloyd double. That gave
the Bucs the lead again. In the fifth Big Ed Delahanty doubled home
John Mize, doubling the lead to 2 runs, 5-3. The Jays closed the gap to
a single run in the bottom of the frame when Kelley (who else) singled
Walker home.
But the sixth was a turning point for the Buccos. Kimbro and Lloyd were
involved, of course. Moore was still on the mound when, with one down,
"Motoneta" Kimbro laced a single to right. Pop was next, and he
launched a shot that split Walker and Dysktra for three bags, chasing
Moore and restoring the lead to 2 runs. Lon Warneke came in and
pitching carefully, walked Raj Hornsby on 5 pitches. But Johnny Mize
lofted a fly to Walker that was deep enough for Scooter to scamper home
on, and it was now 7-4, Bucs. Meanwhile, the Pirate relievers were
doing a job on the Jays. Franco, Shantz and then Nelson held the hard
charging Jays in check until the ninth. A good team effort from the
pen, as had been the case all series.
Jeff Nelson began the bottom of the ninth atop the hill, staring down
"Nails" Dysktra. Lenny flew out to Delahanty for out number one. Sosa
pinch hit for light hitting second sacker Frank White next. Sammy
bounced one to Lloyd for out number two. Then came Larry Walker. The
burly right fielder jumped on the first pitch and sent it far and deep
to right center, banging off the top of the wall and sending it rolling
around until Kimbro finally came up with it. By then the speedy Canuck
was standing at third base. Triple.
Now to the plate strode Saddaharu Oh, the Japanese HR machine. The Bucs
would take no chances with this man. The call to the pen was made.
Bring in the Unit. Percival had been used extensively the past couple
of games, and his arm was feeling a bit tender. Randy Johnson was
fresh--and left handed, as was Oh.
First pitch was a fastball, low and outside. Ball one. Foul. Foul.
Foul. Low and outside again. 2-2 now, man on third, tying run on deck
in the person of Frank "Homerun" Baker, another lefty. This was Unit's
game all the way. Oh liked the next pitch: it looked like a fastball
coming in, but at the last second it spiraled down at an alarming rate
and he could only top it directly to Mize at first. The Big Cat snared
it, jogged to first and raised in arms in victory. Bedlam ensued
for the Steel City nine, while the Toronto boys trudged off the field.
Winners of the first ATL DCS, the Pittsburgh Pirates!
Afterwards, Lloyd talked a bit about the series.. "People are gonna
look at it and say, hey, the Bucs won in four. That must've been easy.
No sir. That team over there," he pointed to the Toronto clubhouse,
"that team has some real gamers playing for them. I'd go to war with
them any day. They've got a lot to be proud of. But so do we. That was
one heck of a series, and I'm proud of these guys for coming through
like they did! No prime time egos, no prima donnas, just hard working
ball players. We just get the job done. I don't care who we play next,
I only care that we ARE gonna play!"
