2005 ATL Season Review

A look at the first season for the Chicago Whitesox . . .

By looking at the record of the Whitesox, one would think that a 79-75 record would make for a 3rd or 4th place middle of the pack finish, but in the Union league Continental division, the Palehose were in the running until the last few days of the season. The fabulous finish by the Washington Nationals (10-0) finished off the strong hearted Whitesox (3-7) and made for a wild finish and kept the fans on the edge of their seats. GM John Dean has a lot of questions to answer for 2006, as he made some deals down the stretch that may have cost the Whitesox a play-off spot. Looking back at the deal, the Sox moved 5 pitchers and 2 hitters and recieved in return 3 hitters and 4 pitchers. The pitchers sent packing had a 33-30 record and a 4+ ERA, and the 2 hitters had batting averages of .257 (Paul Waner) and .213 (Wally Berger). The new hitters put up pretty good numbers but failed in the main area of lead-off/on-base guy . . . Roberto Clemente was brought in to hit 3rd in the order, and he did put up respectable numbers (.300 avg/.455 slug). Tony Perez platooned at 3B and also did well (.309 avg/.539 slug) but the disapointment was in Claudio Vargas, as he posted a meek .316 OB% and a .393 slug%. Very sad for a lead-off man scoring only 22 runs in 48 games.

On the new pitching side,we got solid relief help in Dizzy Dismukes (2.73 ERA,33 IP) and Jose Mesa (0.82 era/11 IP). Starting pitching was OK as Camilio Pascual picked up where Seaver (10-9) left off going 3-4 but with a sparkling 2.49 ERA in 9 starts. El Tiant was the biggest bust of the  whole deal,he was being counted on to replace Blyleven (9-10,3.87 ERA and a no-hitter) and failed miserably by going 4-6,5.72 era in 11 starts.

OK, now for a look at the rest of the team that did not get traded. I have to start with MVP candidate 3b Richie Allen, he was cruising along and crushing pitchers until an injury cost him the last month of the season, his impressive numbers (.293 avg/38 hrs/100 RBI) in only 127 games, he garned a lot of votes for MVP, if he only would have played that final month??? Middle infield was manned by 2B Nellie Fox (.246 avg/.304 OB/.318 slug) and Dick Lundy (.259/.312/.364), not much to write home about.1B was also a very large dissapointment,as Hank Greenberg was being counted on to protect Allen in the line-up, and he did hit for power with 30 homers, but batted just .226 with an OB% of .304 and drove in only 89 runs. Roy Campanella had a tough time hitting behind the plate(.183),he did hit 19 homers and throw out 50% of would be stealers, but hitting below the Mendoza line is not what was expected.Billy Williams and Kiki Cuyler did an admirable job of platooning in LF, they hit a combined .280 with 24 homers and 70 RBI . . . Pitching, the only 2 guys to really talk about here were Phil Niekro and Goose Gossage.Knucksie led the ballclub in starts with 36(21 quality) and IP 233,had a very respectable 14-11 record and a 3.24 ERA.Goose was very solid in his closer role pitching in 59 games, saving 32 (5 blown) and sporting a 2.53 ERA.As the new season approaches, I see a lot of changes being made to the ball-club, pitching needs to be ironed  out and also some OB% type guys to kick start a lowly offense. 2006 will be an interesting year for the Chicago Whitesox.
