2005 ATL Season Review

Senseless In Seattle

This article is not pretty. Kids, the comic page is here: http://www.comics.com/categories/index.html . Older kids, try this: http://www.maximonline.com/index.html . Nothing to see here.

The sky turned dark over Seattle one fine summer day. Not many baseball fans noticed, however, because Barry Bonds had just become a Pilot. Not that Bonds would hurt the team; in fact, as it developed, Bonds would finish the season with 36 homers, fifth in the league. No, that faint scent of electricity in the air was not just another thunderstorm brewing over the Sound; it was the smell of evil.

The Seattle franchise was rocked with controversy from its first days, with the redoubtable Jim Bouton at the helm. Days into the regular season, allegations of conspiracy, cheating, drunkenness, illicit reportage, and general insanity swirled around Sick’s Stadium like the November winds (see Truth, Lies and Puget Sound ). What was the truth, and what was the edited version? No one outside the organization knew for sure.

Then, the man at the top, noted attorney and Butterfinger freak Patrick O’Brien made the mistake of his life. Maybe the last mistake of his life.

He tried to make the team better.

O’Brien dealt Gold’s Gym and Golden Nugget patron Pete Rose and DARE poster boy Doc Gooden to Homestead for Barry "At least my drugs make me play better" Bonds, Jamie "What did I ever do to deserve a trip to Seattle" Moyer, and a draft pick. He then cut clubhouse lawyer Tony Kubek, signing the actually marginally talented keystoner Danny Murphy.

And then . . .

In retrospect, wasn’t it obvious? Couldn’t we hear the whispers? Caretaker management . . . handled by the league . . . votes not received . . . other commitments . . .

Shouldn’t it have been clear to all of us? A Pilot team that could contend was a Pilot team somebody didn’t want. Somebody powerful.

If you were to go into the Seattle front office now – and I don’t recommend it – all you would find is a desk with a battered copy of the original Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, a computer still plaintively connected to The Onion’s website, and a half-eaten Butterfinger.

Do you see it now?

A half-eaten Butterfinger.

This fat man, who loved baseball, loved his kids, and loved his Butterfingers, would never have voluntarily left a half-eaten Butterfinger in his office.

We could point fingers here in the direction of some other strange goings on around baseball – at the surprising Orix franchise, led by the enigmatic "Trish", somehow staying in a pennant race all year; at the Keokuk franchise, formerly enmeshed in an unclear and unholy alliance with Seattle, which dropped shockingly out of contention under their new management; at the entire state of New Jersey, whose franchise mysteriously lost the UL championship (weren’t Steve Reed and Pete Hill seen hanging out with Hal Chase before Game 6?). But we won’t. We don’t know what happened to O’Brien.

Yet.

Where has Smitty been? Sniffing around. Crawling through the dark underbelly of the DMBATL. Doing what reporters do. No, not drinking. Snooping.

Stay tuned. The sordid saga of Seattle still stretches forward.
