Coneheads Celebrate in The Steel City
Pittsburgh
(ATL) The Coneheads had much to celebrate in David Cone's season debut
against the Reds, the second playoff opponent from last year they've
faced that wasn't. These Reds are a different team than the Reds they
faced in the "comeback series" in last season's LCS. Nevertheless, they
look to be quite a good team, despite a terrible start. The Reds'
lineup, laced with superstars such as "Muggsy" McGraw, "Cool Papa" Bell, "Slidin' Billy" Hamilton and "The Big Hurt",
Frank Thomas, among others, was shut down over 6 innings by Coney's 95
MPH fastball and sharp curve. He frequently worked in and out of
trouble however, as evidenced by the alarming number of walks he
allowed: 7. But at the same time he was stingy with the base-hits,
allowing only a two out double to Bell in the 5th and a one out single
to Willie "The Devil" Wells
before the skies opened up and halted play for 83 full minutes in the
sixth. After play resumed Cone whiffed John Beckwith and got
pinch-hitting hurler Charlie Buffington to ground out to end the inning.
The
Bucs, on the other hand, got to the Reds' Montgomery Ward for all the
runs they'd need in the first frame. Monty, the master of the
curve-ball, was fooling nobody early on. "Big Ed" Delahanty lined a one out base-hit to right and the was moved up a base when "Pop"
Lloyd worked a four pitch walk. John Montgomery must've decided to get
the next one over no matter what, and "Rajah" Hornsby was ready for it.
The delivery lacked Ward's signature spin and the Bucs' second sacker
smacked it deep into the right-center alley, good for three bags and
two runs. John "The Big Cat" Mize then brought Hornsby in with a sacrifice fly and made it 3-0 Bucs, after the initial frame.
The Pirates tacked on a couple more during the course of the game and
the Cincy nine also managed a run in the sixth to make the final score
5-1. But that first frame set the tone, and even though Ward calmed
down after that, as good pitchers often do, the die was cast right then
for the Bucs fifth straight win and the Reds fifth straight loss.
A Classic Duel
Pittsburgh
(ATL) The match-up was spectacular, and the game proved up to it's
billing. This game pitted the relocated Cincinnati Reds, now residing
in The Hub City, otherwise known as Boston, and calling themselves the
Red Sox, versus their opponent from last year's Legends League
championship Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the hill for each of
the clubs were their aces, Greg Maddux for the Sox and Randy Johnson
for the Bucs.
The BoSox struck first in a most unconventional way, especially for this explosive offense. Al "Bucket foot" Simmons grounded a base knock between Judy Johnson and "Pop"
Lloyd. Greg Maddux was up next and did his job nicely, executing a
perfect sacrifice bunt to move Simmons into scoring position for the
top of the order. Newly acquired second sacker Joe Morgan blasted a
long fly to "Big Ed" Delahanty in left, deep enough to move Bucketfoot Al to the next station, third base. Morgan, a lefty, had really tagged that one, and it apparently had unnerved The Big Unit. On the next pitch, RJ interrupted his motion and stepped off the rubber. "Balk!"
cried out the third base ump. Boos rained down upon the black garbed
arbiter, and John Mortimer, the Pirates skipper nearly exploded out of
the dugout to argue his case. All to no avail. Mortimer was ejected for
using grammar unbecoming to a field manager, and the game continued.
Johnson, a bit upset himself, went on to put down the batter, Ross
Barnes, on strikes to end the inning. But the run stood. 1-0, Bosox in
the third.
Johnson
and Maddux continued their duel into the seventh, Johnson racking up
the Ks and Maddux being his usual model of efficiency. In the home
seventh however, the Bucs knotted the score at one. With one out,
Rogers Hornsby grounded a single between Barnes and Wilson and into
left field. Maddux then put down the dangerous Johnny Mize on a fly
ball. Turkey Stearnes, another new player for these teams, was up next.
On a 1-2 change, Turkey walloped a two bagger to the right-center gap,
plating Hornsby, who was off with the crack of the bat. Judy Johnson
followed with a single, putting runners on the corners for Gabby
Hartnett. But Maddux was able to squelch the rally right there, getting
Gabby to ground out to Jud Wilson at third. 1-1, tie game after seven
frames.
The starters survived mild threats in the ninth and continued on from
there. In the top of the tenth Johnson whiffed Speaker and Josh Gibson
in a 1-2-3 inning, and that would be all for him on the day. Brian
Giles pinch hit for Johnson in the bottom of the frame, and grounded
out to Barnes in what would be Maddux's last pitch on the day. The two
aces had gone 10 innings apiece, each allowing but a single run. True
to their personalities, The Big unit had whiffed 12 while allowing just
5 hits and 3 walks, while Maddux allowed not a single walk and merely
six hits. Now the game went to the pen.
Troy
Percival, nearly unhittable in the ATL's inaugural season, came in to
pitch the 11th for the Bucs. He put the Sox down in order. For Boston, "The Eck",
Dennis Eckersley, came in for Maddux and immediately got into trouble.
Henry Kimbro ran the count full before lining a single the opposite
way. Motoneta then immediately swiped second base. Craig Silvius, the
Red Sox manager, had Delahanty walked to set up the twin killing. The
Bucs foiled the strategy however, by pulling off a double steal,
putting runners at 2nd and third. Silvius then did what he had to,
walking Lloyd intentionally, loading the bags in the process. Risky for
sure, but the situation was precarious. Hornsby was now up. Rajah has
been hot all year, and there was no one on the team the Pirates fans
would rather see in the batter's box right now. But Eck made short work
of Hornsby, fanning him on four pitches. That brought up "Big Jawn"
Mize. On Eckersley's first delivery, a slider coming in from a 3/4 arm
slot, Mize strode confidently into it and lined it neatly into right
field, ending the duel in dramatic fashion, and sending the Forbes
crowd into a loud celebration.
The first rematch between the two finalists for the Legends League
Championship had lived up to it's hype. The Bucs had taken the first
rematch, but more lay ahead. And more immediately, the Pirates have the
red hot Cubs to deal with, and the Sox the Dodgers and Orioles on their
heels and in their minds. The season has just begun, and so has the
drama.
