Game 1

Pittsburgh (ATL) The culmination of the ATL's first series--the World Series. The two teams, the San Francisco Seals and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Champions of their respective leagues. First game, Forbes Field, and it was filled to capacity and then some. 35,000 fans filled the seats, but standing room allowed for a grand total of 44,392 rabid baseball fans to be on hand to witness history, the ATL's first Championship Game. On the hill were Stan Coveleski for the Bucs and Kevin Brown for the Seals. Coveleski, of course, started the year in the Seals rotation, then found himself in its pen when the team changed ownership in the middle of the season. He was then traded to Tokyo and then on to Pittsburgh before throwing a single pitch for the Japanese club. So he just might have had some extra motivation in his back pocket on this day. Or some slippery elm, at the least. Let the history books note that Coveleski's first pitch went to shortstop Barry Larkin, who took it for ball one. The second pitch was bounced to Larkin's opposite number, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, for the series' first out. Stan then put down Sweet Lou Whitaker on strikes and induced Joltin' Joe DiMaggio to fly out to his opposite number, Henry "Jumbo" Kimbro in center field. Brown's first inning was similarly uneventful. Kimbro, Lloyd and Hornsby went down just like that. In fact, the pitchers held the game scoreless until the bottom of the third frame.

In  the third, Pirates receiver Gabby Hartnett blooped a 1-1 offering from Brown into short center for a safety. After Coveleski tried like hell to get a bunt down, he whiffed, bunting Brown's 13th pitch of the at bat foul for a third strike. Not bad for no result. Well, maybe the next batter benefited just a little from Stan's persistence at the dish. Jumbo Kimbro tripled home the stubby backstop on a 2-2 count, plating the first run in ATL World Series history. Meanwhile Coveleski, who had been hammered in the post season to this point, was mowing down the Seals with his spinning, dancing, and darting deliveries. He seemed to be a man on a mission. "Trade me away?", he seemed to be saying, "I'll show why what." In the fifth the Bucs added another run, Kimbro and Hartnett again teaming up for the 1-2 punch. This time, Coveleski was able to get the bunt down--on Brown's 14th pitch. Did I say Coveleski seemed to be on a mission? Apparently that included his time at the bat as well. His bunt moved Gabby into scoring position, where Jumbo proceeded to bring him home with a line drive in front of Moises Alou in right.

Stan CoveleskiHenry Kimbro The game broke open in the bottom of the sixth and seventh frames, however. It all started with Brown still on the mound. He muffed an easy bouncer off the stick of Pop Lloyd to get things rolling. Rajah grounded a base hit up the middle, sending the speedy Kimbro to third. Jumbo scored on the next play, as Big Jawn Mize bounced one to Sweet Lou at second. Trying to keep the game close, Whitaker fired the ball home, but Kimbro slid around catcher Joe Torre's tag. Everybody's safe, 3-0 Bucs. After the runners moved up on a Delahanty ground ball, LL batting Champ Jess Burkett lifted a fly to Joe D. in center that plated Rajah. 4-0, Bucs. After Billy Francis lined a base hit just over Sweet Lou's out stretched glove, Mr. Brown was done for the day. He had thrown 85 pitches--27 to his mound opponent. Gene Garber was called in and was greeted by a run scoring base knock off Hartnett's bat. 5-0, Bucs.

The next frame put the game out of reach. Coveleski still had the Seals in a choke hold, having allowed just a single base hit, a base knock off the bat of newly activated Mickey Mantle leading off inning two. In the middle of things was, again, Mr. Kimbro. He led the inning off with a two bagger over DiMag's head in center. Lloyd followed with a line drive that scored him easily. Garber recovered to whiff Hornsby and Mize, the Bucs third and fourth place batsmen, but Big Ed Delahanty laced a double to the gap in left center, and it was 7-0, Pirates. The way Coveleski was pitching, that was overkill.

Lou WhitakerMickey Mantle Stan took his one hit shutout into the ninth. Heine Groh led off and ground out to Lloyd. Larkin was next and he went down swinging. But Sweet Lou ruined the party right there, belting a spitter that didn't move way out of the park and deep into the cheap seats in left. DiMaggio took Stan to 3-2 before ending the game with a ground ball to Hornsby at second. Final score, 7-1, Bucs.

Coveleski had carried a 2-1 post season record into the game, but along with that came a bloated 6.59 ERA and 22 hits in 13 and two thirds innings of work. But in this game he was close to untouchable. No Seals batter got past second base until Whitaker cleared the fence with two down in the final inning. It was a post season gem, no doubt about it. Maybe the best pitched game of the post season to date. It was certainly the best effort by a Pirates hurler. "Did you have any extra motivation today Stan?", he was asked after the game. "What? Just what are you smoking?", came the reply. "This is the World Series, man. Who needs extra motivation? We needed the win, that's all. We couldn't let them take Game One in our park. That would be serious trouble. That's all the motivation I needed today. And it was plenty, believe me." He had a sly smile when he said it though. Whatever the case, Kimbro's three hits and Coveleski's dominant performance ruled the day. The series opener goes Pitt's way. Tomorrow it will be Smokey Joe Williams and his explosive fastballs against Eddie Walsh and his spitters. If the Seals have the same trouble against those wet deliveries as they did against Coveleski's, they just might lobby to get the pitch outlawed.

Game 2

Pittsburgh (ATL)  Smokey Joe and his heat against Eddie Walsh and his slippery deliveries. That's what was on the menu today at Forbes Field on a beautiful afternoon for a World Series ball game. With the temps in the 60s, as opposed to the near frigid conditions of Game One (Game Time Temp: 46 degrees), the two Championship ball clubs were ready to do battle once again. For the Seals, they simply wanted to break into the left hand column, to carve their first notch of their series. For the Bucs, it was a chance to add to a good start. They say momentum is only as good as the next day's starter. In that case, this game could certainly go either way. Williams lodged a 15-9 record to go with a 4.18 ERA during the regular season, while Walsh came in at 13-6, 3.32. A pair of pretty good momentum builders there. But the bats were in charge early on.

The Seals had been shut down by ex-teammate Stan Coveleski in Game One, being held scoreless until two were out in the ninth of a game who's outcome had already been decided. Today would be different. Lead-off batter Barry Larkin got things going right away with a base hit off a 1-2 curve. Then, running right into a pitch out he managed to swipe second, then trotted around to third as Gabby Hartnett's throw sailed into centerfield. It was as early as you can get, so the Bucs played the infield back, so when Sweet Lou Whitaker grounded one to Hornsby at second, Rajah simply took the out at first, conceding the run. 1-0, Seals. The Seals had now scored in consecutive innings, Whitaker accounting for both runs. The Bucs, however, came right back in the bottom of that first frame.

After Motoneta Kimbro (AKA Jumbo, AKA Scooter, AKA Henry) lined out to Joe D. in center, Pop Lloyd cashed in a Forbes specialty. That would be a three base hit, a triple, of which this park has seen more of than any other. Lloyd led the Legends circuit with 21 of those during the regular season, and this made 5 more in the post season. Hornsby followed up with a booming two bagger that split DiMaggio and Mantle, scoring Lloyd and knotting the game at one. The Big Cat, John Mize then worked out a four pitch walk. The Seals may have been looking to set up for two there, but Big Ed Delahanty needed to make contact for that strategy to work, and he failed, striking out swinging at Smokey Joe's specialty: high heat. That brought LL Batting Champ Jess Burkett to the dish. The Crab came through for the hometown fans by stroking a base hit through the box, scoring Rajah from second. Mize, quite possibly being over aggressive on the base paths, was nailed at third when DiMag's throw was cut and relayed to Groh, who applied the tag, ending the rally and the inning. But it was now 2-1, Bucs, with 8 innings to go.

Ed WalshSmokey Joe Williams Who would have thought the pitchers would simply take over from there, after that shaky start? They did, although both teams threatened at times, especially in the fourth. The Seals left the sacks full in that frame as a matter of fact. An Adcock single and free passes to Alou and Groh had the San Franciscans set up for the kill. Unfortunately, Smokey Joe was the next batter. Mr. Williams can hit--for a pitcher--but Mr. Walsh would have none of that. Joe went down swinging. That brought up Larkin. Barry went for the first pitch, and grounded it to his opposite number, who calmly threw him out to end the threat. In the bottom of the frame Burkett had himself one of those "Forbes Specialties" with two down. But Billy Francis couldn't cash him in, lining out to centerfield to end the threat.

In the top of the third San Fran got something going again. Whitaker singled, and DiMaggio followed with a base on balls. After The Mick went down on strikes, the daring Seals then executed a perfect double steal. Runners were now on 2nd and 3rd for Joe Torre and Joe Adcock. Torre popped out to Burkett in shallow left, not nearly deep enough to score Sweet Lou. Adcock worked the count full before looking at a called third strike. Once again, end of rally. And so it went. Walsh worked in and out of trouble, as did Williams, but the score remained the same. In the bottom of the seventh the Bucs had something going again. Delahanty and Burkett singled to lead off the inning and chase Williams. The Seals brought in Max Manning, nicknamed Dr. Cyclops for his huge glasses. A power pitcher with a pretty good change of pace, Max has been superlative in the post season, not allowing a run and only four hits in nine relief innings. He stayed true to form, retiring Francis, Hartnett and pinch hitter Bernie Williams to put down another threat.

Jesse BurkettMax Manning Rapid Robert Feller came in to pitch the eighth, allowing a Torre walk sandwiched between punch outs of Mantle and Adcock. Pinch hitter Julio Franco grounded out to end the inning. For the Buccos, the ninth belongs to Troy Percival, and he got pinch hitter Mad Dog Madlock to ground to Francis to start things off. Unfortunately for Pirates fans, Billy couldn't get a handle on it, dropping the ball as he prepared to make his throw. E-5. Boog Powell was called to bat next, and he went down swinging at the high cheese on a full count. Larkin followed with a grounder to Lloyd which would have been two if not for Barry's speed. That brought up Lou Whitaker, the only Seal with an RBI to this point in either contest. But there were no heroics in store for Sweet Lou, as he bounced one to Hornsby to end the game. 2-1, Pirates win. Walsh improved to 3-0 in the post season while Smokey Joe dropped to 0-3. The Bucs are now up two games to none in the best of nine series.

"There's a lot of ball left to be played," Pirates team captain Pop Lloyd said afterwards. "This is good, but by no means does it mean anything. We need 5 wins before we're done. Remember the Reds series, boys? We were down 2 games in that one and came back. This here is a quality team and they could do the same to us. We need to go out there and win tomorrow. Then go to the left coast and win there. There's a whole LOT of baseball left here."

The Seals muscular first sacker seemed to concur. "We'll get our bats going." Boog Powell said in the visitor's locker room. "And then we'll see what happens. I wouldn't be betting against us, let me say that, OK? Just hang tight, there's more coming. Now where's those ribs? I'm damn hungry!"

San Francisco vs Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball

Game 3

Pittsburgh (ATL) It's Game Three of the inaugural ATL World Series, the last game in Pittsburgh before heading west to San Francisco, where these two teams are scheduled four games. That's a long stretch, so Pittsburgh had placed added emphasis on this game. "We need all these games," Gabby Hartnett was saying in the bullpen before the game. "Four games out there could be a nightmare." And since the Seals were down two games coming in, they wanted this game badly as well. "I was in well before curfew last night," Mickey Mantle told this reporter during pre-game stretching. "Well, maybe not. But this is a BIG game. That's why we feel good with Matty out there. He's a big game pitcher." Matty would be Christy Mathewson, 12-5, 3.27 during the regular season, and 1-0, 3.12 in the post season coming into this game. Big Six, as he is also known, is an elite pitcher, someone you gladly would hand the ball to in a do or die situation. Not that the Seals are there, but Mantle and Hartnett's comments illustrate vividly just how important this game is to both teams. The Bucs were going with The Big Unit, Randy Johnson, 15-10, 4.76, with a league leading 228 K's during the regular season, 1-1 with a save, 1.47 ERA in the playoffs. Despite the high regular season ERA, Johnson is certainly another elite pitcher. His comeback from an almost impossibly bad start has been well documented.

Christy MathewsonRandy JohnsonThe game was scoreless until the second inning. Moises Alou led off with a base hit and advanced to second  on a grounder by Bill Madlock. After Johnson disposed of Danning, Big Six came to the plate. Now Matty is a good hitter--for a pitcher--but on a 1-2 fastball, he surprised 40,000 or so fans and 25 Pirates players when he lined a two bagger to the right-center gap, easily plating Mr. Alou. Matty was doing it all for the Seals! Johnson seemed to take it personally, and then he took it out on "Ea-Yah" Jennings, sending him back to the bench on three pitches. But Matty had come through. 1-0, Seals. But as in Game Two, the Bucs charged right back. Johnny Mize worked out a walk after falling behind 0-2, and moved up a base as Big Ed Delahanty singled up the middle. After Matty got Burkett on a pop fly, Billy Francis worked out a four pitch walk, loading the bags. Gabby gave the fans a thrill when he drilled a ball long and far into right field, but Forbes is a big park, and Moises Alou took it in with his back to the wall. Hartnett had almost cleaned the bases, but he did have himself a sac fly to tie the game. The Unit was up next, and let’s just say he's no Matty at the bat. End of rally.

Lou WhitakerHenry KimbroThe Seals jumped right back in front in the top of the third inning. It was the work of Sweet Lou Whitaker, who has come up big all post season (.444-3-9), and especially so in this series. He worked the count full, then--gone! Whitaker, a lefty, had taken The Unit deep and given the Seals their lead back. But again, the lead didn't last. The top of the Pittsburgh lineup has been very productive in the post season, and once again they came through."Scooter" Kimbro grounded a base hit up the middle and promptly stole second on a botched hit and run. But it all worked out fine for the Bucs as Lloyd singled on Matty's next delivery, tying the game once again. Lloyd ran into an out at second, trying to stretch the hit to two bags, but it was a new game, again.

Things did start to change in the bottom of the fifth, however. Again, Scooter Kimbro started things off for the Buccos. He lashed a three bagger past Adcock at first to start the inning off. Lloyd then hit a routine grounder to Whitaker at second, but the ball stayed down, going right between his wickets. E-4, and 3-2 Bucs. Lloyd then swiped second on a straight steal. Matty got Hornsby looking, but Mize worked out another free pass. Delahanty then cashed in with a line drive single, making it a 2 run game. Big Six reached deep and got out of the situation when he got Jess Burkett to ground into a 6-4-3 twin killing. But the next inning proved to be the turning point.

Billy Francis, mired in a slump since the beginning of September, saw a chance and dropped a nice little bunt down the first base line for a single. After Mathewson whiffed Gabby, the Bucs pulled Johnson, sending in Al Oliver to bat for him. Al bounced one to Big Joe Adcock at first, sending Francis to second. Kimbro then dug into the batter's box. After working the count full, Jumbo finally got his pitch: a fastball, low and slightly inside. He turned on it, sending it far and deep, almost like Hartnett's blast--but INTO the bleachers in right field. The crowd roared, the Bucs jumped to the top step of the dugout, and Matty just shook his head on the mound. The blast made the score 6-2, Bucs. Not out of reach, certainly, but no longer a tight game.

Jeff Nelson came in for The Unit and worked two effective innings, while Johnny Allen did the same for the  Seals. Then came the ninth. This was not a save situation, but the Pirates were taking no chances. In came Percival. Joe Torre was up first. The bat never left his shoulder. Three straight fastballs. Three straight strikes. The ageless wonder, Julio Franco, pinch hit for Allen next. he got himself a base hit--right off Percival's shin. The trainers ran out, and Percival sent them back. He felt fine. Next up was Hughie Jennings, who had a tough night to that point, striking out three times in four at bats. It didn't get any better for him. On a 1-1 count he grounded one to Rajah at second, who flipped to Lloyd, who fired it over the sliding Franco to Mize at first: double play! Game, 6-2 Pirates.

So the Pirates open the series by taking the first three games at their home park. Now after a travel day, it'll be on to San Francisco to play four, if needed. The Seals are in a tough spot now, there is no denying it. They have to win 5 of the next 6 games. It is not impossible. But it WILL be tough. But if they take three of four in San Fran, that will bring the series back into manageable territory for  them. The road  for the Bucs is easier, but "Anytime you're up against the likes of Smokey Joe Williams, Kevin Brown and Christy Mathewson, NOTHING is easy, man. We're going to the coast to play some good old country hard ball," Lloyd said after the game, "because that's what we need to do. Anything less in unacceptable, and we'll end up losing games, and the series. And that is unacceptable." Whatever the outcome, it promises to be a hard fought battle all the way to the 27th out of the last game.

Pittsburgh vs San Francisco

Game 4

San Francisco (ATL) Game Four, first game at the stadium at the corner of 16th and Bryant. Not a "must win", in the strictest sense, but if the Seals lost this game, well, talk about an uphill climb. They'd be down four games, and would have to reel off five straight against the Legends League Champions. A tough task, no doubt. David Cone,7-5, 3.00, during the regular season was on the hill for the Bucs, while hard throwing lefty Billy Pierce, 8-7, 5.25, was the Seals' counter. And after Pierce worked a scoreless first, the Seals drew first blood. "Ea-Yah" Jennings boomed a two bagger over Henry Kimbro's head in center, and he took third when Kimbro couldn't find the handle. A batter later "The Mick" brought him home with a long sac fly. Coney was a little wild, walking the bases full before before he was done, but he wriggled out of further trouble when he got Moises Alou on a grounder for the final out of the inning.

Henry KimbroHughie Jennings The score stayed at 1-0 Seals until the fourth. Mr. Kimbro (who else?) started things off with a big double into the right field corner. After Billy Francis was intentionally walked to set up the double play, Gabby Hartnett ruined the strategy by singling home Motoneta, tying the game. Cone tried to lay down a squeeze and failed, but Max Carey followed with a base on balls, loading the bags up. Pop Lloyd came through with a sac fly to give the Bucs the lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Seals jumped ahead once again. Boog Powell, of all people, beat out an infield hit to start things off. Barry Larkin, a more talented runner to be sure, was then inserted as a pinch runner. He promptly stole second. But then Moises Alou rendered all that strategy moot when he hammered a Cone delivery deep into the left field stands. 3-2, Seals.

Kimiyasu KudoManny Sanguillen The game was essentially decided in the the seventh inning though. After an out was recorded, John Mize worked out a walk. Kimbro followed with a base hit, knocking Pierce out of the game. Lefty Kimiyasu Kudo came in to face Jesse Burkett, who drew a walk, loading the bags. After Hartnett flied out to shallow left, Manny Sanguillen was brought in to pinch hit. "Just a hunch,", Pirates' manager John Mortimer said afterwards. "Manny's got a good bat, and I just felt he had he had a hit in it at that time." Well, Manny came through, lining a base hit to center that Joe D. just barely missed making a great catch on. Mize scored, Kimbro scored, and everyone else moved up a base. It was 4-3 Bucs now. Then Max Carey bounced one to Whitaker at second that handcuffed him, scoring another run. Max then swiped second, and Pop Lloyd followed with another walk. That sent Kudo to the showers and brought in Bob Shawkey. He immediately uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Sanguillen. When the dust settled, it was 6-3 Pittsburgh. The Seals got a run back when Mantle homered in the bottom of the inning, but they left two runners on board, and that was essentially the game. Feller pitched an inning and two thirds of clutch scoreless ball in relief, and Percival came in to close things out in the ninth.

It's now 4-0 Bucs, and the Seals have absolutely zero room for error. It'll be spit baller Stan Coveleski, who one hit the Seals in his earlier appearance, against Kevin Brown, the loser in that game when these two teams meet again tomorrow. Will there be a replay of Coveleski's dominance, and a Pirates sweep? Or will the Seals rebound to get into the win column? Stay tuned, there is more ball on the way.

Game 5

San Francisco (ATL) Well, this is it. No more wiggle room for the Seals. If they are to take the trophy home  they must win 5, count 'em, 5 straight ballgames. Against a team on a 7 game roll. That's 7 straight wins against the best teams in the entire league. Piece of cake, right? Of course not. But the Seals had battled against the Blue Wave and Tokyo Giants all year long to win their division, so while this is indeed a tough spot to be in, you might say that these guys are certainly battle-tested. As for the Bucs, they are riding high.  Their staff has dominated the Seals bats so far, and their offense is running like a well oiled machine. And lets not forget that 4 game lead. But the games are played one at a time, and tonight's has Stan Coveleski, he of the one hit masterpiece, against Kevin Brown, the ill tempered righty with the filthy good stuff. It promises to be a classic. I won't give away the ending, but it certainly turned out to be one.

The Pirates mounted the first threat, in the top of the second inning. The Big Cat, Johnny Mize, grounded  a base hit between Powell and Whitaker. Big Ed Delahanty grounded to first on the next pitch, but Kevin Brown twisted an ankle when he ran over to cover first. He made the play, but he'll miss the rest of the series. That could be a big blow to the Seals, as if they needed more bad news. Smokey Joe Williams was called on to  relieve in an emergency role at this point, and immediately gave up a base hit to Jess Burkett, putting runners on the corners with just one down. But the big righty settled down, striking out Billy Francis and getting Hartnett to fly out to Mantle to end the threat.

Meanwhile, Coveleski was cruising, again. Mantle led off the second with a single, and Jennings singled in the sixth, but that was it. Williams was on his game too. He pitched 5 scoreless innings on relief, also allowing just a pair of hits as well as a Stan CoveleskiLou Whitakercouple of walks. This was absolutely a game for the baseball purist. The Bucs rallied  in the top of the seventh, starting with that old bug-a-boo, the lead off walk. This one went to Delahanty. After Burkett flied out, the Seals took no more chances with big Smokey Joe. He left to thunderous applause,  having left his heart out there on the diamond. Mike Jackson came in and got Billy Francis to ground out. The speedy third sacker then stole second, putting himself into scoring position. Jackson then nicked Hartnett with a pitch, and it was 1st and 2nd with two down, Coveleski due up. Decision time for the Bucs. They pulled Mr. Coveleski, no doubt to the great relief of the Seals lineup, inserting Al Oliver as a pinch hitter. Kudo was then called upon to relieve, and the Bucs countered with last night's hero, Manny Sanguillen. But lightning did not strike twice, and Manny popped out to Whitaker on Kudo's first offering. Still no score. Jeff Nelson was summoned to come in from the pen and keep the Seals at bay.

San Fran got a little something of their own going in the bottom of the frame. The Mick massaged a 4-pitch walk with one out, and Boog followed with a line drive base hit, putting runners on 1st and 3rd.  Nelson bore down however, and struck out Torre and Mad Dog Madlock to put down the threat. Still scoreless after seven.

The eighth was uneventful, but the ninth was the difference. Gene Garber came in to face Johnny Mize,  who grounded out to Whitaker on a 2-2 count. Delahanty followed with a grounder to Madlock. It looked like an easy inning. But Burkett grounded a single up the middle, bringing up Billy Francis. Would this be that rally, the one to end the Seals season? But the Lou WhitakerJeff Nelsonlittle sparkplug has had  an uneven postseason, and he struck out swinging, ending the inning, and the "rally". But things got crazy  in the bottom of the inning. Nelson had worked 2 scoreless at this point, and with the lefty Whitaker up, the Bucs considered calling in John Franco, their lefty specialist to work to him. But they decided against it, and it was a decision Seals fans would come to greatly appreciate. The tough second sacker, who has been the Seals most consistent hitter this series, worked the count to 3-1. Nelson then came in with a slider from a side-arm slot. Sweet Lou was looking for it, and he was ready. When he made contact a roar went up from the crowd. Delahanty turned and  raced to the wall and made a mighty leap ... and ... came up empty! Walk Off Homerun! The ball had landed several rows deep, and  this was one ball that was not going to be thrown back. Sweet Lou was mobbed at the plate by his ecstatic team mates while the Bucs silently made their way off the field. This was not the celebration they envisioned at the start of the game. But the city of San Francisco will party tonight! The mighty Bucs have been beaten by their home town boys, in the most exciting fashion imaginable. This was most certainly a classic of a baseball game.

So now it's 4-1, Bucs. There is still a steep hill ahead for the Seals to climb, but at least they know they live another day. And on that day, they'll face Eddie Walsh and his spitter. Walsh, 3-0 in the post season and 13-6 in the regular season, will be another tough moundsmen to beat. In the wake of Brown's injury, the Seals are expected to move Christy Mathewson up a day (12-5, 1-1), although they may go to a surprise starter. If it is Matty as expected, it promises to be another classic pitcher's duel on a par with this one. Either way, the intensity will be just as high. The Pirates are hoping for a celebration, albeit one of a wholly different stripe than tonight's, while the Seals only want to live on to play another day. Which will it be? Tomorrow we'll know. Stay tuned, ATL fans. This series is not over yet.

Pittsburgh vs San Francisco

Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball

Game 6

San Francisco (ATL) Having staved off elimination the night before the Seals were feeling it. Yeah, they were still down 4-1, but didn't these same Pirates come back from a 3-1 hole to take the LLCS? If they can do it, why not us? That seemed to be the prevailing attitude. The Pirates, on the other hand, seemed to be all business. That was a bit odd, as these are a loosey-goosey bunch of guys. well, most of 'em. Don't get too near Kimbro or Rajah when they're in their "moods". Or Jess Burkett, either, for that matter. He's not called "The Crab" because of his culinary preferences, lets just leave it at that. But otherwise, a pretty loose clubhouse. Spit baller Eddie Walsh would be on the hill for the Pittsburghers, while Big Six, Christy Mathewson, would be hurling for the hometowners. Regardless of the moods in the clubhouses, when the game started, it WAS all business.

The Pirates went relatively quietly in the first, but the Seals drew first blood again, just as in game Five. They were helped by some sloppy play by the Bucs along the way. In fact, it all started when The Big Cat fumbled away Sweet Lou Whitaker's routine ground ball. When Joe D. popped out it seemed Walsh would get out of the jam, that being the second out, but The Mick followed with a line single, sending Sweet Lou to third. Mantle then stole second, which as it turned out, was a very big play. That's because Joe Torre, in a serious funk all throughout the series, finally came up big, sending a screamer into center Ed DelahantyJoe Torreto score both runners. 2-0 Seals. Boog would follow with a double, but Billy Francis made a diving catch of a Moises Alou liner that was certainly good for two bases, and two more runs, if he didn't put the leather on it.

And so it stayed, until the fourth. the Bucs tied the game, but they squandered an opportunity to take the lead at the same time. Pop Lloyd, captain and leader in example as well as word, started things off by beating out an infield hit. Rajah, sour disposition and all, followed with a single to left center, sending the speedy Lloyd to third. Big Jawn Mize then walked to fill the sacks. That brought up Big Ed Delahanty, who's had a fine post season. He continued his good batsmanship by lining a single to DiMaggio, plating Lloyd. This is where the Seals "D" stopped the rally, and the Bucs squandered a golden opportunity. Jess Burkett lunged at a Matty fade-away, tapping it back to the pitcher himself. Being as fine a fielder as a pitcher, Matty turned the 1-2-3 twin killing, taking most of the air out of the Pirates rally. They did recover though, as Billy Francis bounced one to Larkin in the hole at short, and thwn beat his throw to the bag. That plated Delahanty, tying the ball game. But that was to be it. Tie game after four.

By the eighth, Matty was gone, as was Eddie Walsh. Bob Feller and Gene Garber had come in and pitched quality ball for both ball clubs.  But now Garber was also gone, and Johnny Allen got the call. His first challenge was Rajah Hornsby. Hornsby looked at Allen's first offering, a fast ball at the knees. Strike one. The next pitch was also a hard one, a bit higher. Hornsby turned on it, and the crowd went silent. The ball sailed high and deep into the left field bleachers. Even old sour puss himself was happy after that one.

The Bucs now had a lead in the 8th inning, and if they held on, it meant rings for everyone. Well, Babe Adams came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th for Pittsburgh, despite his poor showing in the previous game. "I figured he bounce right back," Mortimer would comment later. "I figured wrong. But I'd do it again. Sometimes you're the fly, sometmes you're the windshield. That's baseball."  His first challenge was Barry Larkin. The shortstop worked the count full, then got the pitch he wanted--a flat curve ball. The crowd was on its feet. Could it be? Would he tie it? Did it have the distance? Yes, it did! Tie game, again! Babe recovered to finish the inning uneventfully, but it was a new game. Again.

Mike Jackson set down the Bucs 1-2-3 in the ninth, and Adams got the Seals leadoff batter, Joe Torre, on an easy grounder to start the bottom of the frame. But that would be all for the Babe, as John Franco was called in to face the dangerous Boog Johnny AllenJoe AdcockPowell. The Boog had been held in check all series, but he's capable of hitting one out at any time. So the lefty came in--and promptly walked him. Franco then compounded matters by throwing a 55 foot curve that skipped to the backstop, moving Powell into scoring position. Brown then called on Sherry Magee to pinch run for the lead footed Powell. Mortimer then decided that a runner at first would help, maybe enabling a double play ground ball, so he had Franco give the free pass to Alou. That brought up Mad Dog Madlock. And then call was made for Percival. A run meant the game. Madlock skied one to Burkett. Two down. Big Joe Adcock was then called upon to pinch hit for the pitcher, Jackson. Adcock came in looking dead red, of course, and the only question was could he catch up with it. The answer came very quickly. On Percy's first offering, Adcock sent one deep into the left center gap, scoring Magee and sending the crowd into an frenzied fit of cheering for their heroes. Last night the hero was Whitaker, tonight it was Adcock. The party would play out at least one more night in San Fran.!

Two straight games they had stared at elimination. Two straight games they did not blink. The parallels to Pittsburgh-Cincinnati were now not quite so outrageous. If the Seals could take the next game the series would go back to Pittsburgh--something that was unthinkable just two nights ago. Randy Johnson, 15-10, 2-1, would go for Pittsburgh. Bob Shawkey, 2-3, 0-0, would be pressed into service for the Seals. Are there more miracle comebacks in the San Fran repertoire? Or would Pittsburgh find that one run they seem to come up short these past two games? Well, tomorrow will tell.

Pittsburgh vs San Francisco

Game 7

San Francisco (ATL)  The Seals were ready to roll after two straight walk-off wins against the legend  League's best, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates were chomping at the bit after coming thisclose to celebrating the first ATL Championship in those same two games. The crowd was abuzz in anticipation of yet another classic game, after having witnessed two epic contest in the past two days. The Big Unit would man the hill for the Bucs, while the Kevin Brown injury forced the Seals to go with little used Bob Shawkey. The stage was set. What would play out on it today?

The first inning was anything but mundane. After Jumbo Kimbro popped out to Whitaker at second, Pop Lloyd  worked a full count from the hard throwing Shawkey. Bob came with a fastball, as John Henry thought he might. It hit the outside corner, and Lloyd went with it, sending the sphere deep into left field. Back, back went Mantle, but this ball was gone! Opposite field homerun, John Henry Lloyd. 1-0, Bucs. Groans from the stands. If only Brown wasn't injured, they said. That Shawkey, I never liked him. And so forth. But Bob persevered and retired  the rest of the side with ease. In the bottom of the frame, the groans were transformed to cheers. Larkin looked at four straight balls. Johnson glared at the ump. You're squeezing me, he seemed to be saying, although not a word escaped from his lips. Whitaker then swung at RJ's first offering, blooping a base hit over Hornsby's head. More cheers. Mantle was next. Number 7 dug in, and took a called strike. Three straight sliders all missing the mark. Johnson glared some more. You're squeezing me, dammit. High heat, a swing. a miss.  Full count. The Mick picked up some dirt and rubbed it onto his hands, and dug back in. The Unit came with another slider. But Mickey hit square, hit it solidly. The crowd rose as one as the ball rose majestically into left, deep into left. Over the fence and into the stands deep--a three run shot! The crowd went wild. Johnson  glared at the ump as if to say, are you satisfied now? After the requisite curtain call, the crowd went back to being background buzz, albeit a bit louder than before. The Unit retired the side, finishing up by whiffing Heine Groh on a 2-2 slider, but it was 3-1, Seals. San Fran was getting ready for another party.

Henry KimbroBob Shawkey The Bucs had been here before though. Worse, actually. Just ask the Reds. They picked themselves up and  got back to business. Johnson returned to form, and he & Shawkey began matching goose eggs as the game became a  pitcher's duel. In the top of the fifth, it was still 3-1. Shawkey starting off by whiffing the still struggling Billy Francis. Gabby Hartnett followed with a liner that landed safely in front of Joe DiMaggio  for a single. After RJ bunted foul for strike three, Kimbro came to the dish. Working the count to 2-2, he slammed a curve that didn't curve enough all the way to the right field wall. With two down the Bucs gambled and sent the slow footed Hartnett home. The throw from Alou hit the cut off man Whitaker, and Lou nailed the lumbering catcher at the plate for the third out. Still 3-1 Seals. The buzz increased. Could they do it again?  But Johnson was holding the Seals in check as well. The game was waiting for the right moment.

In the sixth, the visitors inched closer. Lloyd walked. Hornsby walked. That would be all for Shawkey. He  had been more than effective, but he had started to tire. Dr. Cyclops, Max Manning came in, and Mize, on a 2-0 count, belted one deep into right--but not deep enough. Alou gloved it as Lloyd trotted to third. Then Delahanty walked. If you're keeping track, the Bucs had now loaded the sacks without a base hit. Three walks. Jess Burkett was next, and he got a hold of a Manning fastball and also sent it deep to right--where Alou tracked it down  near the wall. Lloyd scored, making it 3-2, Seals. Francis also walked, reloading the bags, but Hartnett lined one to Whitaker to end the "rally", and leaving the sacks loaded. In the bottom of the frame Mantle singled, but was thrown out attempting to steal, the second time Gabby had nailed a runner in the game.

The seventh inning was one neither Pirates nor Seals fans will soon forget. Randy Johnson, still on form, so he was left in to bat and he predictably made out as he led off the inning. Motoneta then lined a base hit to right center. His partner in crime, Johnny MizeGabby HartnettPop Lloyd, then worked out another base on balls--one of 13 the  Seals would present to thew Bucs this day--bringing up Rajah Hornsby. The Seals went to a lefty, Mr. Kimiyasu Kudo, the Japanese  import. Hornsby was in a mean mood, what with being down so late in the game, and having lost 2 straight and all, but his mood only worsened after Kudo snuck a back door curve by him for strike three. That brought up The Big Cat. Mize had  just missed planting one in the seats earlier in the game, and despite a sub par series, John had been hitting the  ball well, as evidenced by his post season numbers as a whole. In any case, Kudo came in with the heat ...  low and right over the plate. The Big Cat pounced on it, hammering it deep over the right field wall--a clutch three run homer! The crowd went silent, except or some fellows in the visitors dug out, some guys in gray uniforms who were jumping around like idiots. The Big Cat had turned the game around, it was now 5-3 Bucs. A couple of walks followed, but Kudo worked out of it. But now there was unease in the stands, and the Bucs could sense victory within their grasp. Nine outs to go. Johnson headed back out to the hill to start the bottom of the seventh.

The Seals, they don't give up so easy though. Moises Alou singled. Heine Groh singled, sending Alou to the opposite corner. That was it for The Unit. Fatigue had obviously set in for him as it had for Shawkey. Jeff Nelson was called upon to put out the fire. Pirates relievers had inherited 28 runners over the course of this post season, and incredibly, only 1 had scored. Nelson himself had come into games with 7 runners on board and left them all where they had stood. Obviously the pen had been key for the Bucs all through their run. They needed more now.Joe Torrre was called upon to hit for Danning. Pop out to Rajah. 8 outs to go. Ea-Yah  Jennings pinch hit for Kudo next. On the first pitch, the daredevil Seals tried a double steal--their fourth of the  series. Only one had been successful to this point. The remaining two, as this one, involved a runner stealing home. So Groh took off for second, and Hartnett fired down to get him, but at the same time Alou broke for home. Nelson cut the throw and fired back to Hartnett who applied the tag ... out! It was a big gamble, but it didn't work. 7 outs to go. However, Jenning finished his at bat and worked out a walk. Larkin ended up stranding both runners, however, as he skied one to Burkett in left. 6 outs left. Quite an inning! A classic, even.

The Bucs padded the lead in the eighth. Harnett, who had a sensational game, including throwing out three runners, now picked up his second hit, a two bagger against new hurler Mike Jackson. Pinch hitter Bernie Williams was given an intentional walk, but Kimbro got one the usual way, loading up the bases. After Lloyd made out, Hornsby sent a slider deep enough to center to score Hartnett. 6-3, Bucs.

Feller came on in the bottom of the eighth and Bucs fans had to be feeling good at that point. After all, here's Bob Feller, IN RELIEF, and they've got a 3 run cushion. But the young fire baller was rudely greeted. After whiffing Sweet Lou and getting Mantle to fly out, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio laced a base hit to right. Yesterday's hero, Joe Adcock, was next, and he did not disappoint the hometown fans, who were getting despondent. He took a 2-1 fast ball and sent it out of the park, no deposit, no return. Another big moment in a game of big moments. 6-5, Bucs. We  were not done yet, boys and girls. Feller finished the inning, but it was now a 1 run game with 3 outs to go.

In the ninth, the Bucs cane roaring back. Delahanty doubled. after an out, there was yet another walk, this one worked by Francis. That brought in another SF hurler, Johnny Allen. Johnny left a fastball up up to Gabby, and he nailed it, good for two bags, his second double and third hit of the night. It scored Delahanty and Francis, and gave the Pirates a three run cushion to work with again. A huge hit from the stocky receiver. The Pirates drew yet another walk, but that was it. The bottom of the ninth was coming, and it was 8-5, Bucs. Three outs and three runs separated Pirates from laying claim to the first ATL Championship.

As expected, Troy Percival came in, as did Gil McDougald, a defensive replacement for Hornsby, his usual role. Percy was usually money: the LL Fireman of The Year had held opposing batters to a minuscule .123 average. Righties had but 7 hits in 98 at bats against Percival's heat. He had been in his own league all year. The playoffs had predictably been not quite so easy, but still, he was 7 for 7 in save opportunities, and carried an ERA under 2. None of this impressed the Seals. Torre led off and took a fastball and then a change for strikes. He grounded one to McDougald on then next  itch. 2 outs left.Time for the bench. To rising cheers came Boog Powell. Boog had been the hero of the ULCS, batting .333 with 10 ribs. He brought that same .333 average to the plate now, but had yet to knock a run in. Now would certainly be a good time, the fans seemed to be saying. Percival was careful with him: perhaps too careful. He walked on 4 pitches. Barry Larkin was next. Barry has had a tough WS, but on a 2-1 fast ball he slapped a single to right, and Boog seemed to grow wings on his ankles as he sped into third. Sweet Lou Whitaker was next. Lou had been the hero in Game Five with his walk off home run. After fouled back a curve, just getting a piece of it, he popped up a fastball that Lloyd squeezed tightly for out number two. 1 to go.

Then a rhythmic chanting started: Mic-key, Mic-key, Mic-key, as Number 7 worked his way from the on deck circle and took his place in the box. He spit on both hands, rubbed them together and picked up his lumber, waving it threateningly over Mickey MantleTroy Percivalthe plate. This man was the tying run. The first pitch was a curve that dropped out of the strike zone. Mick 'aint going for that junk. Next was heat, about letter high. Mantle took a mighty cut--and missed. After taking another low curve for a ball, he stepped out. He looked out at Percival. Mantle had a year almost as impressive as Percival's. He had hit 30 HRs for the Seals in 306 at bats, slugging a cool .676 in the process. Altogether he had smashed 35 taters and knocked in 103 runs. This was the best vs. the best. This is how its supposed to be. Lets settle this right, he seemed to be saying. Power vs. power. Show me what you got. I'll show you what I can do with it. Percival stared in at Hartnett's signals. It didn't matter what he put down now. It was going to be fastballs all the way. In came a 96 MPH heater and The Mick just missed it, fouling it straight back. An eighth of an inch away from a tie game. The next delivery was clocked at 99. The Mick took a mighty cut, and the ball bounced toward Percival, who turned toward first and fired the last strike of the year to Mize. Game. Series. World Championship: Pirates.
