Cincinnati vs Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh (ATL) - The powerful Reds came to town and showed why they won their division by a full 16 games. Right from the start, Stan Coveleski, the Bucs' starter, was in trouble. Tris Speaker, who missed out on the batting title by mere ten-thousandths of a point, laced a single to center. Nomar worked a walk and Shoeless Joe cleared the bases with a three bagger. Three batters, and it was already 2-0, Reds. Double XX brought Jackson in with a single before the Pirates righted their ship by turning a 6-4-3 followed by a K of Bucket Foot Al Simmons. 3-0, Reds. The Bucs did get one back in the bottom of the inning on consecutive two baggers by Hornsby and Mize, but The Mechanical Man (the Reds must lead the league in nicknames as well) got that run back immediately with a long four bagger. So it was 4-1 Reds by the second inning.

Joe JacksonGreg MadduxAfter three Coveleski was replaced with Rapid Robert Feller, and he kept the house in order so the Bucs could mount a comeback. Except they couldn't mount one. Greg Maddux, the Reds' ace, was pitching like one. He kept his foot on the Pirates' neck for seven innings, limiting them to just two runs on five hits. He was masterful, and if pitching wins playoff games, and this reporter believes it does, Mr. Maddux was the main reason the Reds won today. Oh, they tacked on a couple runs in the seventh, but that was icing. Maddux was the story today. Changing speeds, hitting the corners, the man was in control. Coveleski, on the other hand, was hit hard and knocked out early, and he felt as if he let his teammates down. "I didn't give the boys a chance today," he confessed to reporters after the game. "I let them (the Reds) get on top early, and you can't do that with a good team. I just want to go back out there and set it right. But I can't"

Things are "right" for the Reds, however. It's only one game in, of course, but they looked on top of their game today. The only blemish on their scorecard was their shortstop, Garciaparra, going down with what looked like a wrist injury. He's day to day, but the Reds feel he could come back if the series goes long enough. Country Jake Stephens filled in, and if nothing else, adds another nickname to an already colorful lineup!

Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati, Game 2

Cincinnati (AP) The Bucs came to town today needing a win to avoid falling into a big two game hole. To that end, they sent their spit balling maestro, Eddie Walsh, to the hill to facilitate the task. The hometown nine countered with "Moose", Mike Mussina, master of the knuckle curve and what seems to be about a dozen other pitches, in order to dig that hole a little deeper.

With these two teams every game has the potential to be a pitcher's duel. On the other hand, with these lineups, football scores are not out of the question either. So what was it gonna be? Well, the first inning has been an active one in the post season, and this game not an exception to the rule. Moose disposed of Kimbro and Lloyd quickly enough, but his first pitch to Raj Hornsby exploded over the left field wall. 1-0 Bucs. Walsh, for his part, got right down to business. On HIS first pitch, Tris Speaker spanked a triple over the first base bag and into the right field corner. After Country Jake Stephens--Nomar's understudy--whiffed without taking the bat off his shoulder (you can bet he heard about that in the dugout), Shoeless Joe did the job right and tied the game with a sac fly to Kimbro in center. And so the score remained knotted at one until the sixth inning.

Walsh and Mussina were both on their games to this point. But in the sixth, Moose ran into some trouble. With one down Kimbro knocked a single to center. Motoneta's partner in crime, Pop Lloyd, followed with a grounder that found a hole between Stevens and Wilson. First and third, one down. Hornsby up next. The man must have been reading Moose's mind today, because again on the first pitch--gone! Hornsby had himself a two homer game. Earl Weaver was smiling somewhere. Good pitching and three run homers. That'll do it every time. It was now 4-1 Bucs.

Crush Holloway2Josh GibsonAnd so it remained until the bottom of the eighth. Walsh was still throwing pills that danced here and there, and the Reds weren't able to do much with them. But opportunity struck when Josh Gibson boomed a two bagger with none out, and they went to the bench and came up with Crush Holloway, a late season free agent pickup who has prove to be an asset in just such situations. Crush lined a base hit to shallow center, where Kimbro picked it up on the dead run. The third base case coach was waving his right arm wildly, like Pete Townsend in the middle of "Baba O'Reilly," sending Josh home. But Gibson is not exactly a speed demon, and the ball got there before the big receiver did. But inexplicably, Gabby Hartnett dropped the ball--maybe it was the thought of getting flattened by the diesel truck that is Josh Gibson that did it--we'll never know. Regardless, it was an e-2, and a 4-2 ball game. Holloway alertly cruised into second on the play. But here Walsh dug deep and came up tough. Speaker grounded to Mize, with Crush moving to third. Stevens grounded to short on Walsh's first pitch (perhaps thinking of that first at bat of his) but Holloway stayed put at third. Shoeless Joe then did the same on a 1-1 count and Walsh had escaped a big, big jam. But the lead was now only two.

In the ninth the Bucs added a run when Hartnett made up for his fielding gaffe by plating Delahanty, who had doubled, making it 5-2. That brings us to the bottom of the ninth, Percival time for Bucco fans. Troy set aside Foxx, Wilson and Simmons on 9 pitches, 7 of them strikes, and that was that. The series is now tied at one game apiece. The remaining contests promise to bring more excitement, so stay tuned!

Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati, Game 3

Cincinnati (AP) The game seemed over after five batters. Kimbro, single. Lloyd, single. Hornsby, single.1-0. Mize bounced one to third and Jud Wilson threw home, hoping to get the speedy Lloyd. Nope. 2-0. Delahanty, single. 3-0. But then the Reds' starter, Robin Roberts, settled down and stopped the bleeding right there. Still, 3-0 looked good for the Pittsburgh boys. Until the Reds took their swings, that is. Speaker beat out an infield hit, and one out later, Shoeless Joe sent one far and deep into the right field bleachers. just like that it was 3-2. In the second Simmons led off with a single and Gehringer went deep. 4-3 Reds. Things change quickly, no?

Top of the third, Burkett doubled home Mize, and it was a new game again. Another quick change. Neither Roberts nor Cone were at the top of their game, but they both recovered after their initial troubles. The top of the fourth may have been the turning point of the game. The Bucs put together two straight singles and base on balls to load the bags for Mr. Hornsby with one down. A big hit here and the game could be broken open. Just as in game two, Rajah jumped on the first pitch, except this time he grounded it to Jud Wilson at third, starting a 5-2-3 twin killing. The Reds D came up big right there, and the Bucs had let a golden opportunity slip away. "You can't do that against a good team," Hornsby would later declare. He was not happy when he said it.

Gabby HartnettJosh Gibson The Reds finally broke through again in the sixth. Gibson banged a double down the line with one gone. On a hit and run, to the utter amazement of catcher Gabby Hartnett, Gibson stole third when Breecheen, who was pitching by now and was the batter, missed the pitch. Hartnett owns one of the best arms in the league, and for Gibby to steal third, well, that was huge. Breecheen then bounced one to second, and Gibson, again flashing some heretofore unknown speed, scored when he beat the throw home. That was it for Cone, and all for the scoring on the day. The Bucs threatened again, especially in the ninth, when a Delahanty double put runners on second and third with two down, but The Eck, Dennis Eckersly, got Burkett on a routine grounder to Foxx, and the game went to Cincy. A tough game, hard fought on both sides, but Cincy was a run better. They are now also a game better, leading the series 2-1.

Cincinnati RedsPittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati vs Pittsburgh, Game 4

Pittsburgh (ATL): Randy Johnson, 6'10" tall. Devastating slider, nasty fastball. Noodles Hahn, 5'9", relies on what he calls a "Jump Ball." Opposites, for sure, but both can shut your offense down just like that. But as has been the rule in this series, the first inning was an active one. Tris Speaker worked a walk off The Unit, and Shoeless Joe tripled him in. 1-0 Reds right off the bat. The Unit settled down after that, and Hahn worked in and out of trouble for 5 scoreless innings.

Tris SpeakerRogers Hornsby The top of the fifth saw Cincy plate another run when Speaker (that man again) singled home Gehringer. 2-0 Reds. The lead seemed as tall as Everest, and as unapproachable. But in the bottom of the sixth the Bucs broke through. Delahanty tripled. Hornsby singled. 2-1, Reds. Mize singled, but Rajah, ever aggressive, was thrown out at third on a pin point throw from Joe Jackson's strong throwing arm. That out would prove costly, as the next batter, Jesse Burkett, tripled Mize home to tie the score. Then the slumping Billy Francis, normally adept with the bat, tried to sacrifice Burkett home. But even with the infield playing back he was unsuccessful. That also would prove to be a costly play. The inning ended with a tie game.

Johnson and Hahn pitched well, but were eventually replaced by the eighth frame. That's when Cincy pushed across the deciding runs against Bob Feller. Speaker (once again) walked to start things off. Country Jake Stevens sacrificed him to second, and after Jackson was retired, Jud "Boojum" Wilson boomed a two bagger to the right-center gap, scoring the Grey Eagle easily. The Beast, Jimie Foxx, then singled Boojum home, and it was 4-2 Reds, with just 6 outs to go.

The Bucs threatened in both the eighth and ninth frames, but could not get the big hit as Dennis Eckersly and Harry "The Cat" Brecheen proved to be more than a match for the Pirate batsmen.

So Cincinnati goes into Game Five with a commanding 3-1 lead. taking the mound in that contest will be Greg Maddux and Stan Coveleski, two of the best hurlers in the ATL his year. It promises to be another tight game, so stay tuned!

Cincinnati RedsPittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati vs Pittsburgh, Game 5

Pittsburgh (ATL) The Pirates were facing elimination, so this could very well be their final game at Forbes Field this year. "We wanted to give the fans something back, after all their support this year. They've been just great," Johnny "Big Cat" Mize was saying after the game, "but the way things started, oh boy." What he was talking about was the Reds jumping all over Pirates starter Stan Coveleski--again. The Red Legs crossed the dish three times before a Buccaneer had even picked up a bat in anger. This was not what Mize and the boys had in mind as "giving something back to the fans."

Forbes is well known for its outfield nooks and crannies, and long dimensions in general, both of which lend themselves to a proliferation of three base hits. The Bucs led the league in that category, in fact, in no small part due to where they play. But other clubs can avail themselves of Forbes' idiosynchratic dimensions as well. And Cincy did so in in that first frame. With one down Nomar Garciaparra, back after his wrist injury, showed no ill effects and smashed one of those three baggers to the opposite field, right field, in his case. Shoeless Joe brought him in with a single, then after another out had been recorded, "Boojum" Wilson lifted another Forbes specialty, scoring Jackson. He came in on bouncer that Coveleski, no doubt frustrated by his showing, just couldn't get a handle on. 3-0, Reds. Elimination was staring the Bucs in the face. Hard.

But the Pittsburgh Nine did not give up so easily. They knew the game was nine innings long, and they set out to change things. Kimbro led off with a base knock. His "partner in crime," Pop Lloyd, went deep for a two bagger, and the speedy "Motoneta" held up at third because of the score. Rajah then sent a grounder to short that Nomar knocked down, but couldn't make a play on. 3-1. The Big Cat then lifted a sac fly to Speaker in center. 3-2. After another out was marked on the scoresheets, Jess Burkett treated himself to a Forbes specialty, the fourth of the inning, scoring Hornsby. 3-3. Just like that it was a new game. The Bucs had renewed intensity, and it showed.

From there the Reds offense was shut down. Coveleski, another of the Pittsburgh spit ballers, suddendly found control of that pitch, and had his curve working as well. The Cincy Nine did mount a couple of threats, of course, as such a potent lineup is not so easily put down. But the Bucs, backs to the wall as they were, came through for Stan and his successors each time. When a double play was needed, they got it. When a spectacular catch was needed, someone made it. All in all Stan worked two outs into the sixth, leaving with runners on the first two sacks and Tris Speaker at the dish. Johnny Franco is the Bucs' main lefty specialist, and as Speaker has been a big Pirate killer this series, Johnny was summoned to put out this fire. Which he did, getting Tris to lunge at a changeup, bouncing it harmlessly to Lloyd at short. End of threat.

Jesse BurketJohn Franco But the Bucs had not been silent all this time. They went ahead in the fourth when Gabby Hartnett, who has been mostly silent this post season--possibly feeling the after effects of his own injury--went deep off Maddux, the Reds starter. But when Smoltz replaced the Reds' ace, the Bucs really got things going. Bottom of the fifth, Smoltzie on the mound, and Hornsby worked a walk to get thigs going. Mize then laced a two bagger down the right field line, putting men on second and third. Then Big Ed Delahanty bounced one to Gehringer, who threw home to prevent Rajah from scoring. Only Hornsby slid under the tag, and all were safe. The Crab then followed with his second Forbes special of the night. Burkett's triple had made it 7-3. Judy Johnson, playing for the unproductive Billy Francis, laid down a sacrifice bunt nicely, making it 8-3. Even against the Reds that is a big lead, but by no means a safe one. But the hometowners tacked on a pair in the sixth to officially label it a blowout. The Pirates now had 10 unanswered runs, and if momentum were something you could count on in baseball, it was theirs. But momentum is a funny thing: the Reds seemed to have it this game at first, then the Bucs took it away from them.

"This was awesome." Pop Lloyd said afterwards. "But we're still down 3-2. We just want to get to Game Seven. That's all anyone is saying around here. Get to Game Seven. Just make it happen." For the Reds' part, they know they need just one more win to get to the Big Series. "And we're going home now. We have the odds all in our favor. They're coming to our house now." Josh Gibson was saying in the Reds locker room. "A win is a win, a loss is a loss. Nothing more, nothing less. We didn't expect these guys to roll over and die. We'll be there for Game Six."

Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati, Game 6

Cincinnati (ATL) Game Six pitted spitball maestro Eddie Walsh against the pitching artistry of Mike Mussina. If  Mussina could corral the rampaging Bucs, his boys would advance to the Big Series. If Walsh could shut down the Reds bats, he'd dampen their celebration for at least one more night. So of course, the first inning belonged to the batsmen.

Henry Kimbro starting things off right for the visiting Bucs by lining a two bagger to the right center gap. An out later, Hornsby went shopping at the left center gap for two more bags. The Big Cat then went and picked up a couple more bags himself. Moose was in trouble already. But he escaped without further damage. 2-0, Bucs. It seemed Walsh had the Reds under control, getting Speaker and Garciaparra on ground outs, and inducing yet another grounder from Shoeless Joe. But the normally sure handed Johnny Mize bobbled the ball and Jackson was safe. You know that old adage about not giving a good team extra outs? Well, it was just about to be re-inforced yet again. Walsh lost Foxx to a base on balls, then Boojum Wilson found the right fields seats so inviting he deposited a Walsh delivery there, free of charge. 3-2, Reds.

These teams are both battlers though, and in inning four the Bucs regained the lead. The Crab, AKA Jesse Burkett did a nice Jud Wilson imatation to tie the game at 3. Then Billy Francis laced a two bagger into left, and Gabby Hartnett grounded one over the third base sack that was also good for 2 bases, and a 4-3 Pittsburgh  lead.

Did I say these teams are battlers? Well, in the bottom of the frame, The Mechanincal Man, AKA Charlie Gehringer smashed one right by Johnny Mize that went for three. Big old Josh Gibson then brought him in with a  sac fly, and the score was knotted again, four all. The next inning the Reds would move out in front on a Speaker single and a Garciaparra four bagger. Nomar has been en fuego since coming back. So now it's 6-4, Reds.

The top of inning six, however, saw the Bucs jump out in front again. The Bucs put runners at second and third with two down, then Kimbro, Lloyd and Rajah all followed with run scoring base knocks. That knocked Mussina out and brought Tiny Bonham in, who whiffed The Big Cat to finally end the threat. Of course, the Reds would come right back. But you knew that, right? By this time Rapid Robert Feller was on the hill for the Buccos. With one down. Nomar and Tris lined singles, putting runners on first and third. Shoeless Joe knocked one in with a fly. Then Pop Lloyd would bungle a potential inning ending grounder, enabling Jud Wilson to come to the plate. He must enjoy torturing fielders who make errors, 'cuz he banged a two bagger to left center scoring Nomar. 8-7, Reds. Dizzy yet? This was one wild game.

Al OliverPop Lloyd You knew it was coming, right? Next inning, the Pirates tied the game at eight. With runners on first and second Al Oliver pinch hit for Feller and came through with the big hit, a single that plated Burkett.  Eight-eight. And so it would remain. Straight through the regulation nine. Straight through every Pirate pitcher except Randy Johnson and Troy Percival. Straight through Aramaki, Fingers and Shaw for the Reds. Then came the thirteenth inning.

Harry Breechen, who has pitched exceedingly well all post season was the Reds hurler. Judy Johnson up. Sit down, struck out. Kimbro up. Sit down, struck out. Pop Lloyd up. the count is 1-0. Breecheen went with his money pitch, the screwball. But Lloyd, a lefty, was all over it. Deep to right center--gone! 9-8, Pirates. Hornsby up next and he got aboard on an error by Shoeless Joe, placing him at second. Scoring position. Would the Bucs add to their lead? Nope. Johnny Mize, take a seat. Struck out. So The Cat had whiffed the side, yet John Henry Lloyd had taken him deep, and the Bucs had a lead.

A lead on the road in the ninth or later. That means one thing, and one thing only for the Bucs. Troy Percival. The man with the 100 MPH heater. Nearly unhittable during the regular season. But this is the post season. He didn't have the bottom of the order to deal either. Garciaparra, Jackson and Foxx. A tough trio. This was pressure. Nomar, take a seat. struck out. Shoeless, harmless fly ball to Delahanty. Foxx, routine grounder to Francis at third. Game. Finally. After 13 innings, 381 pitches, 30 hits, 4 HRs, 8 2Bs, 17 runs, 18 Ks, 6 BBs, and 21 LOB, we had a winner. And a Game Seven. "That's all we wanted," said the game's hero Pop Lloyd afterwards in a happy, but exhausted Pirates locker room. "Game Seven. Now we've got it. God, I love this game."

Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati, Game 7

Cincinnati (ATL) This one was for all the marbles. Well, as far as the Legends league is concerned, anyway. There is still the Unions and their Champs, the SF Seals to deal with. But today, it was Randy Johnson vs. Robin Roberts for the Legends league Championship. Both were 15 game winners during the season, although Johnson struggled so much in the early going that the term "Randy Johnson Disease" came into use whenever a good pitcher was underperforming. But he won 9 of his last 10 in the regular season, and had pitched well in the post season. Roberts, 15-4 during the year, obviously had success consistently all year. But as the game started, the Bucs picked up right where they had left off in winning the past two games. Kimbro worked out an 8 pitch walk. After Pop Lloyd grounded out, Motoneta scootered around on a Hornsby single. 1-0, Bucs. Then The Big Cat strode to the plate. He saw one pitch, a fastball right in his wheelhouse, and he nailed it. 3-0, Bucs. "I wanted that ball up." Roberts would say after the game, "But it stayed down, dammit." Would the Reds come right back as they had in previous games? Not if The Unit had anything to say about it.

Randy JohnsonJohnny Mize Johnson was magnificent on the day he most needed to be. He had the potent Reds lineup swinging and missing at 90 MPH sliders and 98 MPH heaters all afternoon. In all, The Big Unit racked up 10 K's in his 7 innings of work, allowing just 2 hits. He didn't allow an earned run, although he did make one costly mistake. Bottom of the fifth, and now it's 4-0 Bucs. With one  down, normally sure handed third sacker Billy Francis fumbled and bumbled an Al Simmons bouncer. After inducing Gehringer to fly out, Johnson opted to pitch to the always dangerous Josh Gibson, despite the pitcher's slot being behind him. Well, on an 0-1 pitch Big Josh cut the lead right in half. Loud Homerun ensued. 4-2, Bucs. Nerves aplenty on the Pirate bench, hopes renewed on the Reds side. But in the sixth and seventh the Unit allowed just a walk to Garciaparra, while fanning a couple more Red Legs.

In the eighth, the Pirates were faced with a decision. With one out, Gabby Hartnett singled, bringing Johnson to the plate. Or would they pinch hit? He'd only thrown 90 pitches, but Smoltz, who had come on for Roberts, had been pitching well. This might be their only chance for another run. The Bucs gambled and pinch hit. Not a good move, as it turned out. Bernie Williams, the man selected for the job, promptly grounded into a textbook 4-6-3 twin killing. End of rally. And now, no Unit. Would that open the door for the Reds to come back? The Bucs went to Jeff Nelson, unscored upon so far in the series, in 2 plus innings. Of course, he was greeted by a base hit immediately. Crush Holloway pinch hit for Smoltz next, and flew out. Then the Bucs went batter to batter. Franco came in for Speaker. Fly out to Kimbro. Feller came in for Garciaparra. Fly out to Burkett. End of inning.

Fingers came in for the Reds and set down the Bucs in order in the ninth. The Pirates went to their closer, Percival. Shoeless Joe was first. On a full count he lined out to Mize. One down. Jimie Foxx, silent all series after almost single handedly destroying the Giants in the Division Series, lined a double to right center. More nerves on the Pittsburgh side. More renewed hopes on the Cincy side. Then Jack Fournier pinch hit for the inconsistent Jud Wilson. He went down on strikes. One out to go. Bucketfoot Al was now all that stood in the way of the Bucs advancing to the World Series. He was also the tying run, so he could change everything with one swing. He wasted no time. The first pitch was dead red, of course. Simmons hit it sharply--but right at Pop Lloyd, who threw to first. Out. Game. Series. The comeback was complete! "It was an incredible series between two excellent teams," captain Pop Lloyd said afterwards. "I have nothing but respect for those guys. If it wasn't for Randy pitching like he did, like the ace he is, well, the champagne would be flowing in the other locker room. He was awesome. We needed him to be. Those Reds, man, that's one helluva a team. To comeback from a 3-1 hole against them, well, I'm speechless. This is just one team that doesn't give up, that's all I can say." So now Bucs will move on. The Seals await.
