Carey, a man on a mission. The lightly regarded outfielder came through
once again today with a clutch base hit in the 8th inning that made a
winner of reliever Willie Foster. Troy Percival came on in the 9th and
did what he does, retiring the side in order for his fifth save in six
chances.
But the big story today was Mr. Carey, only playing because an injury
has sidelined Negro League star Chino Smith, and only on the Pirates
team at all as throw-in in the Randy Johnson-Mel Ott mega deal. But the
speedy outfieler has made quite a case for himself as a big part of the
Pirate team, batting a nifty .345 in relief of Mr. Smith.
For their part, the Giants lamented another late inning collapse. The
pen seems to be unable to get that one critical out and the defense
falls apart at just the wrong moment. Giants manager John Dean was none
too pleased with today's effort, especially coming a day after a
similar late inning loss to the Bucs.
"This is all too familar", John Dean said after the game. "Something
has to change. I didn't want to take ol' Rube out because he was
throwing well and the pen has not been doing its job. But he was
exhausted and I had no choice. Can't keep the man out there when
there's nothing left in the tank. Sure 'nuff, the pen gives up the
winning hit. Again. I don't like it. No sir."

Amos Rusie, traded away during spring training in a deal for
Johnny Mize, continued his winning ways by beating his old teammates
today, 5-4. Rusie is now 3-1, despite a fairly unhealthy ERA of 5.70.
For the Pirates, the bright spot was shortstop John Henry "Pop" Lloyd
hitting for the cycle. It's believed to be the first in ATL history,
although this is unverified.
Amos' pitch count rose rapidily in the later innings as New York
manager John Dean was reluctant to go to his pen just to "pour gas on
the fire", as he said after the game. Sure enough, Hoyt Wilhelm was
touched up a bit, but he left the game with the save, which is all that
matters to the New York faithful.
To the Buc rooters, it was another day to rue the depature of Marvelous
Melvin Ott, who was traded away for their "ace", Randy Johnson. The Big
Unit has been the Big Bust so far, as he dropped to 1-3 with the loss
today, with a robust 4.54 ERA.
Third sacker Billy Francis was hit by a pitch in the 4th inning and was
placed on the DL after the game. The Pirates called up the newly signed
Pie Traynor to take his spot on the roster, although word is Judy
Johnson will probably step in as starter until Billy returns.
