Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati

CINCINNATI TELEGRAPH (October 5th) - Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Identical records. Similar statistics. Neither one picked to win their division. All year both teams doggedly pursued their goal reflecting along the way the hard nosed working man's ethos of the cities that bear their names. Two teams...one dream. Now these two powerhouses meet on the field of battle for one final series of the season to determine who will stand atop the Legends League in it's inaugural season. It is as it should be... baseball at it's best.

Cab Calloway A scheduling glitch occurred for game one when a Cab Calloway concert featuring Britney Spears had been booked for Crosley on the 4th. The front office of both clubs agreed to a new schedule that would start game one in Pittsburgh. The Cincinnati fan's disappointment was soon replaced with joy as hometown hero Gregg Maddux gave a memorable performance.

"The Professor" was masterful. Pitch after pitch, going for the hitters weakest points, Maddux went straight for the kill. Outside corner, inside corner, down and away, and always at different speeds from that same stripped down monotonous delivery Reds fans have come to know and love.

Nomar Garciaparra The thrill of his performance was tempered somewhat by a wrist injury to Nomar Garciaparra in the 5th. "Spiderman" (or "Glass" as he is also appropriately known as) will probably miss the next several days but he is expected to be back before the series concludes. "I should be back 100% in a couple of days" said Nomar. "It's not like I ruptured my groin tendon or something."

Game two came to Cincinnati where the Bucs were determined to tie things up. Both Ed Walsh and "Moose" Mussina pitched well, but the day would belong to "Rajah" Hornsby whose two homeruns accounted for 4 of the 5 runs in the Buc's 5-2 victory. The Reds will send Robin Roberts to the mound for game three before the series heads back to Forbes as this clash of titans continues. Ah yes . . . baseball at it's best.

Game 3

 CINCINNATI TELEGRAPH (October 7): Game three proved to be another classic struggle between these two fine teams. For a change of pace, aggressive running on the base paths, an area the hometown boys are known for about as much as they are for their beauty, ruled the day. The game was tied at 3 up in the sixth when the normally lead footed Josh Gibson smacked a double down the left field line. Then, with pitcher Harry Breecheen up sporting his impressive .080 batting average, manager Drew Dale flashed the "hit and run" sign.

"I think he was feeling bad about being 0-2 with 2 Ks so when he lumbered in to 2nd he was the one that threw up the "hit and run" suggestion to me" said Dale after the game. "I figured no one in their right mind would expect it. I thought that Breecheen had blown it when he did a triple take to me, then to Josh, then back to me, followed by a huge shrug of his shoulders before walking up to the dish."

Harry BrecheenJosh Gibson On the next pitch, "The Cat" missed the pitch by a country mile and "Gibby" was off. The stadium shook with every thunderous stride he took and when the dust settled at third, Gibson had his second stolen base . . . of his career.

"Some of us had gone out for Mexican food before the game" said Gibby. "When I stepped up to the plate, the ole rummblin' in my belly began. So I'ze says to myself "Josh, you betta hit this one out 'cause you about to have the "green apple quick step. When I ended up on second the rumblin' was gettin' mighty powerful so I figure I'ze either gonna look like a fool by crappin' my draws before all these fine folks or look like a fool by gettin' tossed out at third, so I bolted on the first pitch. It's a good thing Harry made contact on the next pitch cause if he hadn't I was fixin' on stealing home and messin' up "Gabby" in more ways then one. Guess that's why they call it the trots," said Gibson in his own inimitable way.

This proved to be all that was needed as the "Ohio Gang" went on to win game three, 5-4. As for this writer, I've chosen Paco, owner and chief cook of the Montezuma restaurant, as the player of the game.

Game 4

Words of Wisdom

CINCINATTI TELEGRAPH (October 9): Game five. A sense of anticipation was in the air as the Reds, up three games to Tris SpeakerRobin Robertsone, stood on the verge of triumph. The cameras flashed as MVP winner Tris Speaker poised with Cy Young award winner Robin Roberts and runners up Jimmie Foxx and Gregg Maddux. But the Buccaneers, driven by the dogged determination that has been their mark all season, were not impressed. When the final out was made, the Reds found themselves on the receiving end of a 10-3 thrashing and a return trip home to the "Queen City" for game six.

In an effort to find some words of wisdom to relay to our heroes, I sought out the advice of two of baseball's legends who were in town to catch the game. After a short search, I found Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel in a popular sports bar around the corner from Forbes Field. After a brief introduction, I asked these two if there was any advice I could pass on to the team. Yogi was first to respond.

Jimmy FoxxGreg Maddux "Don't count on nuttin'" he said "'cause nuttin' ain't sumpn' and if you ain't got nuttin and you count on sumpn', you're countin on nuttin' cause it ain't sumpn'. A ring is sumpn' but if you don't have it, it's nuttin so you betta not count on it or you'll end up wit whatja got... nuttin."

As I was attempting to digest his words, Stengel spoke up.

"Well put Yoger," said the "Old Perfesser." "Reminds me of the triple A World Series back when I managed the Toleder Mets... ever been to Toleder... it's in Ohio... nice people there ... pretty girls too... met an actress... don't remember her name... I'm usually pretty good with names... she wanted to marry me... even bought her a ring...couldn't marry her... found out she was allergic to strawberries... I love strawberries...I'm allergic to cats... feller Breecheen on the Cincy team nicknamed "The Cat"... them boy's have more nicknames than Carter has little liver pills... type of wild cat is a fisher cat... we was playing the Manchester Fisher Cats... Manchester's in N.H. ... pretty state... "live free or die" is their motto... no seat belt law in that state... don't have to "buckle up"... hit a fisher cat once when I was driving up there... funny looking beast, a fisher cat... "Beast" is another one of those nicknames they have for that big boy Jaimmie Foxx... a fisher cat can kill a fox, don't ya know... speaking of funny looking, they were managed by this funny looking feller name of Harvey Milk... goofy name for a feller "Milk"... I wonder who first thought of drinking the white stuff that comes out of those little dangly things on a cow... I like milk, but not in my coffee... gotta be cream... nice fresh cream. Well anyway, they were up three games to one and we come back to win the next three taking the series 4 games to three... so I think you get my point."

Yogi BerraCasey Stengel Yogi nodded in approval saying "Dems is woids of wisdom Casey."

Perplexed I looked at Stengel and said "Casey, I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."

"You know, for a feller who makes his living with words" he said, "you ain't particularly brightSince I gotta spell it out for you... spelling was never my strong point in school... history was my best subject... liked the wars and stuff... Civil War's my favorite... what I said was that if those Reds don't buckle down and get their act together, they're gonna get creamed and never see those rings."

As Yogi excused himself for a trip to the rest room, Casey asked him if he wanted another pizza.

"Yeah" said Yogi, "but dis time have em cut it into six slices. Last time they cut it into eight and I had trouble finishing the whole thing."

"That boy can eat," said Stengel. "Only person I seen eat more is that "Baby" Root... like the candy bar...I like candy bars...my favorite is a "Mounds"... hear they might lower the mound... It'll be tougher for the pitchers..."

"...BEERTENDER..."

"...another pitcher of beer for my new pal "Pinko"... knew a shortstop named "Pinko" once... commie I  think...
"

and on it went into the wee hours of the morning.

Game 7

"Bucketfoot" At The Bat
(With apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer)
Bucketfoot Al Simmons

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the "Red Machine" that day,
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play.
And then when "Shoeless Joe" lined out, to steady Johnny Mize,
It seemed like our old "Cincy Boys" would lose the much sought prize.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast.
They thought, if only "Bucketfoot" could but get a whack at that.
We'd put up even money with Aloysius at the bat."

But Foxx preceded Simmons, as did Wilson, first name Judd;
"Double X" of late a strikeout king, while "Bojum" was a dud.
So upon that stricken multitude, grim melancholy sat;
for there seemed but little chance of "Bucketfoot" getting to bat.

But "Beast" let drive a double, to the wonderment of all.
Then Fornier for Wilson, took three whiffs at the ball.
So when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
With two outs "Beast" was safe at second and taking a lead toward third.

Then from ten thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
it rumbled the Ohio valley, it rattled in the dell;
it pounded through on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat;
for Simmons, known as "Bucketfoot," was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Simmons' manner as he stepped into his place,
there was pride in old Al's bearing and a smile lit Simmon's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
no person in the crowd could doubt t'was "Bucketfoot" at the bat.

Twenty thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt.
Ten thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then, while the writhing Percival ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance was in "Bucketfoot's" eye, a sneer curled Simmon's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
Aloysius stood watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped --
"That ain't my style," said Simmons. "Strike one!" the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
like the beating of the storm waves on a stern and distant shore.
"Kill him! Kill Mortimer!" shouted someone on the stand,
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Simmons raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity, "Bucketfoot's" visage shone,
He stilled the rising tumult, he bade the game go on.
He signaled to Percival, and once more the dun sphere flew,
Aloysius still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two!"

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered "Fraud!"
But one stern look from "Bucketfoot" and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
and they knew that old Al wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer has fled from Simmon's lip, the teeth are clenched in hate.
He pounds, with cruel violence, his bat upon the plate.
And now Troy Percival holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
and now the air is shattered by the force of Simmon's blow.

They say in Pennsylvania the sun is shining bright.
Now Calloway's band plays "The Steel City" and there the hearts are light.
Yes in Pittsburgh men are laughing, and little children shout,
But there's no joy in Cincinnati -- "Bucketfoot" has grounded out.

Until next year, this is "Pinky" Hose signing off.
