New York (ATL): The Polo Grounds. The
Ballpark that was never meant to be a ballpark. Nevertheless, the Polo
Grounds is one of history's most famous baseball yards. Back to
the Polo Grounds behind in games 2-to-zip, the Giants had to relocate
that magic that led them to their late-season heroics. While it was
almost inevitable that the Giants lose a game after such a powerful
winning streak, if not in length than in pressure, there are only 3
losses allowed in this series. One more and the Giants are out.
But not this day. True, Jimmy Foxx demonstrated why they call him
The Beast,
with a leadoff second inning very long ball straight down the very
short left field line. Reds in the lead, 1-0. We learned after the game
that the Giants gameplan was to walk Foxx or pitch him wide every at
bat. However, Rusie took matters into his own hands and pitched him
aggressively the three times they faced. Rusie would strike Foxx out in
the 4th, and induce a
long fly ball out in the 6th. So Rusie won 2 out of 3 matchups -- which almost wasn't good enough.
Willie "
Pops" Stargell put one
out along the opposite line in the bottom of the second, but the Giants
still trailed 2-1. You could see the Giants players trying to make
things happen, trying to force an error by being aggressive on the
bases and playing some small ball with the bunt and hit & run. But
Robin Roberts wasn't allowing them much opportunity to much of
anything. But in the 8th after Bill Dickey worked a 3-and-2 walk and
Wild Bill Wright lashed a single up the middle after pulling his bunt
back on 2 consecutive ball calls, and Lefty O'Doul strode to the plate
to pinch-hit for Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers came in to take the ball
away from Robin Roberts. Fingers threw 11 total pitches, 10 for strikes, and forced the Giants to hit 3
groundballs -- but the Reds defense could not save the day. O'Doul's
groundout to Gehringer advanced the runners. Ozzie Smith's groundball
to Garciaparra turned into a Fielder's Choice that scored a runner.
Then George Scales' grounder found the hole between Gehringer and Foxx
and knocked another run in, and Ozzie to third -- where he scored 2
pitches later on Musial's sac fly to Speaker. Giants in front, 4-3.
Rube Waddell came in to pitch the 9th for the Giants. He was dead
on, needing only 8 pitches to finish the job. He popped out Jud Wilson,
and then
made Al Simmons and Charlie Gehringer grounded out to close it out.
And the Giants force a 4th game.

CINCINNATI TELEGRAPH: The Polo Grounds, New York (September 30)
After taking the first two games in squeakers, our Reds now travel east
to the Polo Grounds where the Giants looked to regain the momentum that
propelled them into post season play. A partisan crowd of Mets and
Yankee fans joined the Giant's faithful looking to force a 5th game and
bring home a championship to "
The Big Apple." I talked to Stan "
The Man" Musial before the game about the attitude in the Giants club house. "
We've
fought all season long in a tough division to get where we are now" he
said. "This team thrives on this kind of pressure and were gonna battle
them nail and tooth 'til the last out." Indeed, the Reds have been on cruise control since late last spring. Have our boys become complacent? Has "
The Big Red Machine"
gotten a bit rusty? Did Silvius' decision to bench the regulars in the
final two weeks of the season make our boys fat while the Giants got
hungrier and hungrier? These questions will soon be answered.
In game three, Robin Roberts was masterful, cruising along into the
eighth yielding only one 1 run on 2 hits. It looked like it was time to
get the brooms out when disaster struck. The eight inning had been the
undoing of the Giants in the first two games. Now, taking a page out of
the Reds book, the "
never say die" Giants came up with 3 runs to take a 4-3 lead. "
That's all she wrote"
as the saying goes, as Rube Waddell came on in the ninth and retired
the side in order, thus preserving the win for Hoyt Wilhelm, the losing
pitcher in game 2. Had the momentum now shifted to the Giants?
Just prior to game four, word had just arrived that the Sports Writers
of America had chosen Tris Speaker as the Legends League MVP. I saw
Tris in the locker room prior to the game and talk about the award.
"
All the awards in the world don't matter squat if we don't win this"
said the 21 year old, whose premature grey around the temples has
already earned him the moniker "
The Grey Eagle."
"
I'm honored with the selection but the truth is there are 34 other
guys on this team, and a few who are no longer with us like
Freddie" (refering to Fred Lynn who filled in for Speaker when he was on
the DL for 21 days) "
who are just as deserving of this award. This
belongs to them as much as it does to me." Perhaps that grey around
this young man's temples is indicative of a wisdom far beyond his 21
years.
Manager Drew Dale held a close door meeting with the team in the club
house prior to game four. Whatever he said seemed to work. Timely
hitting, including a game winning double by pitcher "
Noodles"
Hahn, resulted in the Reds scoring in each inning through the first 6.
The bullpen shut down the Giants in the final four frames giving the
visitors an 8-4 win and clinching a playoff berth against the Bucs for
the league championship.
"
Each man is my superior in that I may learn from him"
said Emerson. From these Giants we have all taken away with us the
importance of gamesmanship, perseverance, guts, and above all...
heart.

In
the first game, the momentum that drove the Giants into the post season
seemed to continue for them as staff ace Gregg Maddux was tagged for
four runs in six innings. Then in the bottom of the eighth with the
locals trailing by a run, "Double X" drove one deep to left driving in "Shoeless Joe" to put the Reds ahead to stay. In the ninth, Jeff Shaw retired the side in order, and game one was history.
