The Seals' 'pen Outmuscles Hot-hitting Nationals
SAN FRANCISCO (ATL, Sept. 26) -- With starting pitcher Smokey Joe
Williams showing a little ice, the last thing the San Francisco Seals
needed in Game 1 of their Union League playoff series was a red-hot
Washington squad.
Or
a relief pitcher hurting himself while walking a batter. But that's
the hand the Seals played Tuesday night, finding a pathway to a 5-2
victory.
Max Manning (1-0), who later would injure himself when he walked
Washington's Fred McGriff, hit a sacrifice fly during the pivotal
three-run fourth inning to push the Seals ahead against Walter Johnson
(0-1). Moises Alou, who finished the game 3-for-4, scored the go-ahead
run.
Pelayo Chacon followed with a two-out triple to bring home Babe Herman
with an insurance run San Francisco would never need. In the top of the
fifth inning, after Freddie Lynn rocketed a double into the left-center
field gap for his third consecutive hit of the contest, Manning came up
lame when he walked McGriff. But, with two on and no one out, Gene
Garber entered the game for the Seals, fire extinguisher in hand. He
retired the next three hitters. Over the next four innings, Garber,
Mike Jackson and Kimiyasu Kudo limited Washington to three hits -- two
hung on Garber in the sixth inning.
Lynn was 3-for-5 for the Nationals, and a suddenly resurgent Charlie
Keller was 4-for-4. Keller hit just .229 during the regular season.
San Francisco was paced by three hits apiece from Chacon and Alou.

Hot-hitting Seals Have to Fight
for Victory in Last At-Bat
SAN FRANCISCO (ATL, Sept. 27) -- Until the ninth inning, this was a
classic, hard-fought playoff game. Then disaster struck, leaving a sick
feeling in the stomach of every Washington National. Sure-fielding John
McGraw committed an error at third base in the bottom of the ninth
inning at Seals Stadium, allowing Bill Madlock to score and San
Francisco to escape with a 3-2 victory and a two games to none lead in
the best-of-five Union League playoff series. Up until the moment
McGraw booted the ball, Washington manager Lou Poulas had made all the
right moves. With the game tied 2-2, Poulas told Bruce Sutter to
intentionally walk Lou Whitaker and set up what could have been an
inning-ending double play. It was a wise move because Whitaker was
3-for-4 in the ballgame and the guy behind him, burly Boog Powell, was
having problems seeing the ball.
But
Powell hit a roller to McGraw, who couldn't make the play, and the
Seals took a load of momentum to Washington. The Nationals, who struck
for a short-lived 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, knotted the score in
the seventh when George Davis scored from third on a wild pitch by
Kimiyasu Kudo. It was one of two wild pitches in the inning by two
different San Francisco pitchers.
Washington owned a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Mathewson walked Fred
Clarke. Clarke moved to second on a sacrifice then stole third base --
much to the surprised of San Francisco manager Jon Brown -- before
scoring on McGraw's sacrifice fly. "That was a great manufactured run
by Lou," Brown said after the game. "It comes down to execution, and
McGraw is one of the best in the game at getting the job done."
Moises Alou drilled a two-run single to give San Francisco the lead in
the sixth. That inning was prolonged by George Davis' error. Three of
the Seals' eight runs in the first two games of the series were
unearned.

Brown said of Pierce. "Billy had his rocky patches this year, but he is
one of the toughest lefties to get to when the chips are down." Herman
was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, but it was the top of
the order that did the majority of the damage for the Pacific Division
champs.
