The
powerhouses of the South Division squared off for two of three games
they have together this period. A great time was had by all in the 90
& 100 degree weather in Havana.
Ramon Bragaña (2-0) was spot on for the first game, striking out
Bucketfoot Al Simmons 4 consecutive times on his way to racking up 10
K's for the game. Alejandro Oms and Perucho Cepeda hit home runs for
the victors, and Josh Gibson blasted one for the losers. Aramaki (2-2)
took the loss in relief.

The second game featured 102 degree
heat, and wild pitching from both sides. The Reds jumped off to a 4 run
lead early, and forced Havana to pinch-hit for José Mendez in the 5th
inning. Mendez had allowed 7 hits, walked 4 and was generally in
trouble all the time. Havana would go on to score 5 runs that inning,
and take the lead. But Juan Pizarro (1-1) could not hold the Reds down,
and he suffered on the mound just like Mendez. Ramon Arano would
relieve him after 2 innings, but he couldn't stop the Reds either.
Final score 9-7, Reds. Wilbur Cooper (1-0) picked up the win in relief
of Rube Foster. Fingers picked up his 5th save of the year with one inning of tough work.

El Tiante
Luis Tiant (4-0) spun a masterpiece against Mike Mussina (6-2) and the
visiting Reds here for the rubber match of the series. Tiant had a no
hitter through five, when Josh Gibson (.330) put one in the parking lot over
the left field wall to bring the score within 1. That was all Tiant
would let the Reds have, though, as he finished with a 1-hitter and was
never in trouble.
The first run of the game was expensive for the Leones. In the bottom
of the first, two outs and Oms (.419) on first base, Torriente doubled deep to
right field. Oms took a chance on the arm of Joe Jackson and tried to
score from first. The throw beat the league's batting leader by 10
feet, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. Oms put his shoulder
down and barreled into Josh Gibson at the plate. The ball came loose,
Oms scored, Gibson was charged with an error . . . but Oms needed
medical attention and had to leave the game. He is expected to miss
about a week.
