The
Havana professional ballclub traveled to Toronto for a single game to
open the month of May. Numero Uno starter, José "Black Diamond" Mendez
took the mound, and was masterful through most of the game. Striking
out 4 in the first two innings, and 7 for his eight and two-thirds of
work, he was rarely in trouble. However, two rain delays finally took
their toll, and Mendez needed help to finish the game.
Larry Walker lashed a triple down the right field line in the 9th, and
scored on a ground ball to Cepeda at short. After Kinugasa singled, and
was replaced at first by pinch-runner Dave Concepcion, José Mesa came
in to get the last out. Mesa threw several times over to first to try
to pick off Concepcion, but after almost throwing it away on one
attempt he decided to focus on the batter. One pitch and an easy
groundout later, and Mesa had his 6th Save of the season.
Mendez ran his mark to 3-1, 3.67, while Lon Warneke pitching in his
first game of the season did well but took the loss. Clemente lifted
his second home run of the season in the 2nd inning, while Mendez
himself scored the necessary insurance run by being driven in by Dihigo
after lining a double through the outfield.
