All Time League

Mel OttSeries 1 is over, and there are 40 more series to go -- ain't it grand how long the season is? Sure it's a long way to the green at the other end of summer, but let's take a moment to chronicle the players who started the season like a house a'fire! How many of these names will be talked about all season long? Which will fade from memory before the All Star Break? Let's see . . .

Mel Ott has put the Union League on notice that he must be reckoned with. Master Melvin has torn the hide off the ball, and has sprinted to the Union League lead in Batting Average (.533), On Base Average (..632), Slugging Average (.1.267), Hits (8), Home Runs (3-tied), RC/27 (48.8), RC (12.7), Isolated Power (..733), Total Average (.3.286), Total Bases (19), OBA+SLG (1.898), Secondary Average (1.000-tied), AB per HR (5.0) and all the Total Base plus Walk & etc lists. Whew! Mel is the royalty of his Kansas City Monarchs team. Kaoru Betto of the Tokyo Giants* leads the Union League in Runs Batted In (9), Cleveland Spider third baseman Al Rosen leads in Home Runs (3-tied) and Extra-Base Hits (5), and Hideki Matsui of Tokyo leads in Extra-Base Hits (5-tied) and Doubles (4-tied).

Ted WilliamsOver in that other league, the Legends League, there's a bit more diversity atop the batting leaders, but the talk of the series has to be Ted Williams of the Saint Louis Stars. The Splendid Splinter has opened the season with home runs in each of the first four games -- including a 2-homer game. Williams leads the Legends League in Slugging Average (1.400), Runs Batted In (8), Home Runs (5), Extra-Base Hits (5), AB per HR (3.0), and like Ott, Ted leads all the Total Bases plus Walk & etc lists. He's got his home run stroke groovin'!

First baseman Dan Brouthers of the Chicago Cubs leads the Legends League in Batting Average (.467) and Stolen Bases (3-tied), Houston Colt .45 left fielder Barry Bonds paces the league in On Base Average (.550), Ross Barnes of the Boston Red Sox leads in Hits (9), and Ed Delahanty of Pittsburgh tops the list in Runs Scored (6).

Boston Red CapsOn the mound it's too early to single out any pitcher, but not a staff. The pitching corps of the Union League's Boston Red Caps have come out of the first series with a 1.95 ERA, 3 Quality Starts, 2 Complete Games, 1 Shutout and 2 Wins. They also lead the Union League in Least Hits Allowed (29), OPS (.565) & IPAVG (.224),. The pitching friendly expanses of Braves Field certainly had an influence on these stats, and the Red Caps staff will have to prove themselves out on the road as well -- even in divisional rival park, American League Park I in Washington.

The San Francisco Seals hit a rough spot here, and bring up the bottom of the Union League in ERA (5.40), but they also lead the league in K's (30). The Saint Louis Cardinals have allowed the fewest Walks (7), and the New York Yankees haven't allowed a home run yet.

Pittsburgh PiratesSailing away with the ERA lead in the Legends League is the unbeaten staff of the Pittsburgh Pirates (2.25), who also lead in Least Hits Allowed (23-tied), Saves (2-tied) and Least Runs Alloed (9). The Brooklyn Dodger staff tops the charts in K's (38), helped out by a Sandy Koufax 13 K shutout performance. The Oakland A's staff has allowed the fewest Free Passes (8). But at this point we should also take a moment to highlight the horrible start the Mudville Nine (6.75, 9 HRA, 36 IP) and the Saint Louis Stars (6.09) have had. Lett's wish them well on the road back to respectability.

Oh! talking about respectable . . . Oakland has commited only a single error so far, and that's the fewest number of any team in both leagues.

OK, I'll leave you with some leader lists, just for the fun of it.
